The Calgary Flames have made a large wave of cuts to their training camp schedule as we get closer to the opening evening. This time the team cut a total of 11 players, with four players who are waiting.
Flames went to the Wranglers
The Flames have assigned seven players directly to the Calgary Wranglers. Those players are Hunter Brzustewicz, Nick Cicek, Artem Grushnikov, William Stromgren, Sam Honzek, Aydar Suniev and Owen say.
No big surprises here. None of the above names were once considered to make the team, where most extraordinary camps need to earn a place in the NHL to start the season. Hunter Brzustewicz probably had the best shot in the camp, but he did not make the impact needed to make his way to a busy Flames Blueline.
A little surprise is how early Sam Honzek goes down. After he had made the NHL schedule directly from the camp last year, the first Rounder of 2023 this time had a rather disappointing preview and never looked contrary to an NHL job. Casted by 2024 first-rounder Matvei Gridin on the depth map, Honzek will go back on the right track in the AHL in a hugely important season.
Flames placed by distance
On top of the seven players above who were sent to the AHL, another four names were placed remotely with the intention of allocating them to the AHL. Those players are Clark Bishop, Dryden Hunt, Yan Kuznetsov and Sam Morton.
It would be quite the surprise to see that one of the above four players claimed remotely, and all four should easily go to the Wranglers tomorrow afternoon. Yan Kuznetsov fought for one of the last places on the Blueline, but it seems that he has been defeated by Ilya Solovyov for the time being.
Training camp now up to 27 players
The schedule is now on 27 players who have been left in the camp, with three goalkeepers, nine defenders and 15 ahead. We are now in the last part, with an opening evening a little more than a week away. The team will have to cut four more players next week before the opening evening on October 7.
It seems that the last fights in the camp came to Matvei Gridin, Justin Kirkland and Rory Kerins at Forward, and Solovyov, Daniil Miromanov, Brayden Pachal and Jake Bean for defense.
