Captain Backs will sit for another three years Mikael Backlund, who is located in his last year of a two-year-old deal, has signed an extension of two years, the team announced. This deal starts at the end of this season and runs until the end of the 2027-28 season. He previously signed an extension of two years with his last contract.
The 36-year-old Swede played his entire 17-year career in Calgary and played his 1000th career game last season. Backlund has been an integral part of the organization of the Flames his entire career and a staple in the city. Before the 2023–24 season, Backlund was declared the 21st captain in the franchise history. Before that he was five seasons alternative.
Backlund’s career
In his 1,066 career competitions, Backlund has collected 215 goals, 348 assists for a total of 563 points. The only other flames that fit for 1000 games is the greatest flame of all time, Jarome Iginla. With the new contract, Backlund is almost a shoo-in to pass Iginla and to become the franchise leader in games played. Backlund, prepared in the NHL design of 2007 in the NHL design of 2007, made his NHL debut on January 8, 2009.
Backlund previously won the King Clancy Memorial Trophy, given to the player who is best an example of leadership on and next to the ice. He now has the opportunity to lead the next generation of flames and wants to make the leap to the NHL.
