Braves probably reaching unlikely fashion in 2-1 losses for Phillies

Bryce Elder was crushed by everyone this season, but especially by the Phillies. Ranger Suarez has been great this season, including the Braves twice, and came from the best two-start piece of his career. The result, by which I mean a loss of Braves, seemed pretty likely. But the way the loss unfolded? Well, that’s baseball, honey.

In the air in the air in the air in the air in the air in the air in the air in the air. Far from dominating, Suarez managed only a 2/1 K/BB ratio and left after five innovation work. Because of Xfip it was his third worst start of the season. The Braves, however, did not really hit the ball with Oomph, and more problematic (but perhaps also somewhat expected for someone who has seen them touch this season), they usually couldn’t really chain non-outs. Here is how they have wasted their chances:

After this, the Philadelphia Bullpen took over, and although the Braves had a few two-out baserunners in the seventh and a one-out single in the eighth, it was it. Jhoan Duran bloats both Jurickson Profar and Olson to end the game.

Okay, so the Braves that are not suitable for winning a game without gay is nothing new, and although Suarez did not eat them alive, they did not succeed in many runs in this. So what was unexpected? Well, the fact that Bryce Elder … does not implod. Or explode. Or any form of color. To be clear: Elder was not exactly fantastic – a 4.65 XFIP and a 3/2 K/BB ratio is not a sign of a changed man. But for once the HR/FB did not torture him, and in fact the only barrel for both teams in the night was a run for the benefit of Elder compared to the warning lane in the middle.

Elder came early through innings; A leadoff walk in the fourth, a Bryce Harper Bunt -Single, and a Brandon Marsh -Single scored the first run of Philadelphia. Then the only other batters in Philadelphia came to reach as a result of a Nacho Alvarez Jr. -fout and another walk. Elder had a 1-2-3 seventh, with 27 batters in total.

So then the Braves lost on a Homer, right? No. They just lost with the same things they did to Suarez, just better closed. With one out in the eighth, Dylan Lee Kyle Schwarber was committed to swing on a perfectly placed slider on the low and outside corner, and the result was a weak bloop single in the middle. Lee then left Harper to a slider nowhere near the zone, and he pulled it on the floor between two infielers. Save a little more in both directions and it is a collection-ending doubles, instead it put runners on the corners. Pierce Johnson came out and a generic flight ball to the right scored the last run of the game. You already know how it ended.

Matt Olson had three hits in this, but two were bloops and one was a groundball single. Oh, but for another Olson Homer at Citizens Bank Park. Ozzie Albies, Nick Allen and Acuña also all reached the base several times, but to a few benefits.

The series continues with the return of Chris Sale tomorrow.
