Bournemouth fans react after seeing Newcastle United win the FA Cup thriller

Bournemouth fans were reintroduced to Eddie Howe.

A legend at the club, who saved them from falling into non-league and then guided them all the way through the divisions to the Premier League.

The two teams met at St James’ Park on Saturday.

Eddie Howe has recorded zero wins in Newcastle’s seven games in the league against Bournemouth, although five of the seven have been draws.

However, Bournemouth fans will now see their team lose to Eddie’s NUFC in cup competitions for the second time, although it’s fair to say this was ‘slightly’ more dramatic than December 2022’s Carabao Cup win over SJP, which saw Newcastle take a step towards an eventual appearance at Wembley.

So it will be interesting to see what Bournemouth fans have to say about what happened in Saturday’s match, a drama-filled one that left Newcastle United behind in the end.

It was also a shootout revenge for United, 34 years since Bournemouth won on penalties at St James’ Park in the FA Cup in 1992.

Bournemouth fans respond via their message board Finished the cherries…

‘Petrovic did well in the shootout, especially in the beginning. The big miss came from Jiminez when he handed over the sudden death initiative to them. Their penalties suddenly improved and we had to score every time. It was inevitable that someone would miss under the pressure of 50,000 Geordies booing them.”

‘I think Petrovic was very unlucky with the penalty. Even a home fan traveling with us on the train thought the attacker had lost the ball and the decision was very soft.’

Too bad it can’t be seen live.’

‘I still had TNT Sports following the Ashes, they had a ‘goal show’ and jumped all over the ground showing the action. Then they showed the penalty shoot-out live.

Huge bias though with Kevin Nolan in the studio.’

‘We scored 3 away from home, really pushed a top team away from home, especially in a very entertaining match. Even though the numbers are low.’

‘There is an irony in the sale and forced changes, which for today have left us with a line-up moving towards the 4-4-1-1 formation that EH favored when he was here.

The good news for us was that Newcastle have some big games on the schedule and injury problems in their squad. Plus, we all know EH’s MO in the FA Cup third round, so I had no doubt we’d see a selection of youth team players and outcasts starting for them. And we all know the total lack of coherence that leads to a quick exit.

About that…

Yeah, for possibly the first time in EH’s management career, we didn’t see that. Sure, they made some changes. I think this shows the difference in depth between us and the struggles we face. Look at who started ahead of them as rotation options.”

“Incredibly annoying way to lose.”

‘Disappointing result, but another great match to watch.’

‘I can imagine that the players are shocked that they have lost that. Physically but also mentally they created more than enough to put it to bed and, simply put, Newcastle were lucky in stoppage time. And then took advantage of the shaky remains of our team towards the end of extra time.

If George A Romero is looking for a plot for his next Living Dead film, he would do well to consider how in that moment a team of shuffling corpses somehow managed to come back and create a new sensation.

Beautiful and tells you everything about these players and this manager.’

‘Players have made us proud. Probably my least favorite outing because of the overzealous security, although I do love the city.”

‘It is worth noting that the air advantage was a constant threat.

We couldn’t do anything about it because she just towered over us.

One Newcastle cross into the penalty area saw them win four consecutive headers. Luckily they didn’t achieve anything, but that’s a measure of how much they could dominate us in the air.”

‘Penalties. It’s a shame that the money-hungry Champions League teams denied us the chance for a repeat that we more than deserved, but that’s modern football.

The punishments felt cruel considering who they sent to take theirs, compared to who we had to use.”

“How on earth is Iraola supposed to feel when every talent he has nurtured and honed walks out the door. I wouldn’t blame him at all if he’s next.’

‘Their height advantage reminded me of the Persian army attacking the 300 Spartans.

AFCB never gives up, AFCB never surrenders.

Give them nothing, but take everything from them.

And you know what, we almost did it.

Chapeau for one, all.”

‘That really hurt.

Did anyone else think Barnes was offside for his third goal?’

‘I know it is not a fair competition, but shoot-outs are in favor of the bigger clubs. Eddie had a much stronger bench, which translated into better chances in the shootout. Even with that said, we had them on the ropes and just couldn’t put them away.

In terms of fairness, I would suggest that a manager should be able to make a choice from all the players on his playing list that day. We brought in Kroupi, Brooks and Scott. Get them back in, plus Tavs, and we have a good chance.”

‘Great effort from a recovered side with so many out at the moment.

Some of you commenting on these match day threads need to take a long hard look at yourselves.

It’s not even close to embarrassing.’

‘A very, very good performance from ALL the players today. They never gave up even when they were exhausted (as Newcastle players were honest)

Sanctions are a lottery, so there is no shame in the outcome.

We had the chances to win the game with some one on ones with Rambo (but so did Newcastle)

A great match for the neutral side, but ultimately not the result we perhaps deserved.’
