Australia underlined their status as the team to beat the FIBA Asia Cup 2025, with the Philippines 84-60 dismantled in Wednesday’s quarterfinals in King Abdullah Sports City to stay unbeaten and move the last four.
The defending champion did not waste time to give control and only seven triples in the opening quarter to build an impressive 29-12 lead. Jaylin Galloway set the early tone with three brands of deep, while Jack McVeigh and Will Magnay went together with important games at both ends.
Owen Foxwell led the boomers with 17 points and added 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 three-Pointers. Will Magnay offered all-round support with 10 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 stem and 1 blocked shot, while Galloway and McVeigh gave a steady production on the circumference. Harry Wessels in the presence also delivered timely baskets and opportunities in the second chance.
For the Philippines, Kevin Quiabao bravely fought with a team-high 17 points, 4 rebounds and 5 triples. Dwight Ramos added 15 points and 7 boards. Justin Brownlee was held on 10 points on 3-of-7 field goal shooting.
The first quarter -shoot clinic in Australia immediately placed Gilas Pilipinas on the rear, which forces them to catch up. Galloway’s early three, in combination with the timely long bombs of McVeigh, gave the boomers a double -digit pillow that only grew when Magnay and Xavier Cooks claimed inside.
“We have tried to do a number of things, but it didn’t work for us. We tried to turn it into an execution type instead of up and down, but they just overwhelmed that idea,” the coach of the Philippines admitted Tim Cone. “They started very well and jumped on a lead, and we played the rest of the game on our heels.”
The Philippines briefly found their life in the second quarter behind the hot hand of Quiambao and Ramos’ Midrange game, which cut in the shortage. But Wessels and Cooks answered the paint and recovered a 20-point margin during the break, 48-28.
Every hope for a comeback was quickly extinguished in the third period. Foxwell Buried Back-to-Back Triples Before Galloway hit again and pushed the lead again 20. Brownlee, Ramos and Scottie Thompson tried to generate the Philippines, but the defensive rotations of Australia kept them at a distance.
The Boomers maintained their grip in the last frame. Magnay’s Inside Score set the tone, McVeigh saved back-to-back Turnaround-Jumpers and Foxwell orchestrated the attack with Poise. Joshua Bannan’s return in the final minutes has essentially sealed a wire-to-wire victory.
“I am just very proud of how we recovered and defended. We just came up in the defensive end and on the boards. I am very happy,” said Australia -coach Adam Caporn. “We had a very good start. Our grit and balance kept it.”
Australia, now 4-0 in the tournament, is expanding their undefeated line in Fiba Asia Cup game since he was booked at the location of a semi-final place in 2017 on Saturday. They stay firm on course for a third straight continental crown.
For the Philippines, the loss ends a spicy campaign on 2-3. After their dramatic overtime hours, against hosts Saudi Arabia in qualifying for quarterfinals, they found the size, depth and shooting of the boomers too much to handle.
The Boomers are now waiting for their next opponents, with the Focus Square on the fact that their record keeps impeccable and their championships alive.
