Two Minnesota Timberwolves players who helped determine Tuesday’s outcome were guard Bones Hyland and center Joan Beringer, according to Jon Krawczynski.
Hyland delivered one of the most efficient performances of his career, scoring 23 points with five assists and posting an eye-popping plus-41 in just 21 minutes.
In recent weeks he has steadily taken on a reliable role, scoring and providing energy when the starters took their seats.
Beringer’s evening was just as remarkable for several reasons.
The rookie logged his first meaningful minutes of the season and made the most of it, finishing with 12 points, five rebounds and a plus-30 in 30 minutes.
His activity level and composure stood out, prompting head coach Chris Finch to acknowledge that a regular spot in the rotation could be in play in the future.
“That’s possible. People will have to sacrifice minutes, but if he plays like that, we should take advantage of everyone,” Finch said. “We will take this step by step. Since the night of the draft, we have believed in this child for a long time. This is just the beginning.”
Hyland, meanwhile, sees his recent consistency as a product of the growth that has taken place since he entered the league.
In an interview with R.org’s Spencer Davis, the former first-round pick reflected on how his perspective has changed since being selected 26th overall in 2021.
“I would say the biggest thing is maturity, understanding the business side of basketball, and also just understanding the patience of basketball,” Hyland said. “I feel like some guys get carried away and lose their minds, lose their mental battle with basketball.
“I feel like once you beat that, everything becomes a lot easier for you on the court. I feel like I’ve beaten that, and now I’m just taking care of the basketball part and just trying to go out there and be the best basketball player I can be for Minnesota.”
