Bolivia achieved a dramatic 1-0 win over Brazil in their final world cup qualification in 2026 on Tuesday, a result that propelled them in the Intercontinental Play-Offs and meant a stunning conclusion for the South American qualifying campaign. The South American qualifications concluded with a series of surprising results. While Argentina and Ecuador had already protected their places at the World Cup, their competition in Guayaquil was still a fiery affair. Argentina, who finished as the Top team of Conmebol with 39 points, was beaten 1-0 by Ecuador after a first half of Enner Valencia. The match saw both teams reduced to 10 men, with Nicolas Otamendi from Argentina and Moises Caicedo from Ecuador who received red cards.

The result achieved third place for Colombia in the last rankings. Uruguay finished fourth after a 0-0 draw with Chile, while Paraguay’s 1-0 win over Peru in Lima left them in sixth place.
The top six teams of the Conmebol qualifying campaign-Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay-Hebben all automatic berths protected on the extensive world cup of 48 teams. Bolivia, who ends seventh, will now continue to the intercontinental play -offs, where they will compete for one of the two remaining places in the tournament. The play -offs are planned in March 2026, with six teams from five confederations: one of AFC, CAF, Conmebol and OFC, plus two from Concacaf.
