The 3-2 loss of the US Davis Cup team for the Czech Republic in the second round of Davis Cup in Delray Beach, Florida was clearly a disappointment for the American team and fans of American tennis. Bob Bryan, the second-year American Davis Cup captain,, however, immediately after the loss of positives that came out of the weekend and for which he and the team are grateful. The next are some comments from Bryan in his post-Even meeting with the media.
It was absolutely nice to be here in the house and to play for the home fans. Nothing goes beyond a home-and-road in Davis Cup. It is cool for this community to feel that Davis Cup energy and what it can be. This event has a lot of history and we all love it, and I think the fans really enjoyed their few days here.
It would clearly have been better if we had done it, but still many inspiring versions from this team. You know, Taylor Fritz, who could not practice all week and lay in bed with an illness, came out and played two great matches. Dug deep. Had a huge victory for us on the first day and really proud of the way he competed. You know, you don’t feel his best, but he played some spectacular tennis and today just ran against a little harder opponent. And our double boys, Rajeev and Austin, have delivered one of the most epic competitions for which I have been to the couch. You know, three hours at a high level tennis. You know, ups and downs, momentum shifts. You know, they came up with the goods. They raised their level and had the crowd going, what everything you can ask for. So I was very honored to be with them there at the time.
You know, hat off for the Czech team. Tomas Berdych came in here and prepared his team well. It is a difficult team on paper, and they played, you know, as they can. They touch large service on the breaking points, on the big points, and you know, they deserved to win. They will be dangerous in Bologna, and that is a team that can win the tournament.
You know, hat off for them.
There was a lot (to be positive about it), although, you know, the team did not manage and we lost this draw, there were so many inspiring moments during this week. You know, starting with our employees who give us everything they have every day, and we have the best in the industry in every category, whether it’s massage, string, physios, coaching staff. We have a great team. I would like to play with those guys next year.
Reilly Opelka, who did not play a match here, but you know, he has been practicing here since Saturday. Every day he was doing everything we needed, welcomed the sidelines and brought the energy to the dressing room. You know, everything that Reilly brought, you don’t see it, because he was not in the win-and-Loss-column, but he adds a lot to this team. It was great to have Jay Berger made a guest appearance. He has been – I think he has done for 13 years at the Davis Cup team, so it’s nice to have him back. David Macpherson, who was our coach on tour for 15 years, was here. Mark Bey, Genius Tennis Mind from Chicago, Great Buddy, helped us on tour for many years, was here. My brother did a great job, as always. It was, you know, you don’t see all these little things, but you know, it makes the week much more fun. Although we have not won, I still leave here with great memories.
