BMW has issued a global recall over a possible problem with the starter motor in more than half a million vehicles produced between July 2020 and July 2022, where the part could make the vehicle more difficult or impossible to start at all.

Over time, a large number of starting operations can lead to increased wear of the unit’s magnetic switch, which can cause starting problems. In rare cases this could lead to a possible short circuit and fire hazard, and the possibility of this hazard prompted the recall, as BMW blog reports.

Citing various news sources, the website said around 575,000 vehicles have been affected by the action, and these include a number of models and variants. These include the G42 2 Series Coupé, 3 Series (G20 sedan, G21 touring, G28 China long wheelbase version), 4 Series (G22 coupe, G23 convertible, G26 Gran Coupé), 5 Series (G30 sedan, G31 touring), G32 6 Series Gran Turismo and 7 Series (G11, G12).

Also included in the list are the G01 X3, G02 X4, G05 The recall affects 28,582 vehicles in Germany, while a similar action in the US affects 87,394 units. The corrective measure is of course to replace the starter motor and in some cases also to replace the 12V starter battery.

Locally, BMW Group Malaysia says it is currently determining the actual number of vehicles affected by the recall. In a brief statement, the company said its authorized dealer partners will contact customers affected by the recall directly, and assured customers that their vehicles remain safe.
