Now that the BMW Neue Class has shown the future direction of the BMW 3 Series, the powerful M equivalent will make its debut “from 2027” according to BMW.

All battery-electric models from BMW M will receive one electric drive unit for each wheel, for a total of four drive motors, delivering a drive concept that combines all the advantages of rear-wheel and all-wheel drive while improving driving dynamics on the road and on the track.

In both drive units, the motors are arranged in parallel, with each motor delivering power to a gearbox per wheel. These drive units integrate the inverter to control the electric motors and the oil supply, thus allowing precise control of power and torque at each wheel for optimal traction, torque distribution between the brake and drive motors and energy recovery.

In addition, the front axle can be “completely decoupled,” effectively creating a rear-wheel drive configuration, according to the manufacturer. According to the company, these are the most powerful drive units ever used by BMW M; It was previously reported that the upcoming model could boast a combined power output of up to one megawatt, or 1,341 PS (1,360 hp).

Meanwhile, the M-specific control software aims to enable maximum energy recuperation and optimal traction to the utmost, along with more direct responses, building on the 800-volt electrical architecture that forms the technical basis of the Neue Klasse.

The upcoming BMW M models will feature a range of driving modes and, with a view to delivering an emotional driving experience from a battery-electric vehicle, will also feature simulated gear changes and a “newly developed soundscape”.

The energy for the upcoming battery-electric M models will be stored in a battery with a usable capacity of more than 100 kWh, using a performance-optimized version of the Gen6 cylindrical battery cell. On M models, the battery control unit is located outside the battery pack and is optimized to operate with higher battery power and higher peak and charging performance, BMW said.

The battery housing also serves as a structural part of the vehicle, connecting the front and rear axles to achieve higher rigidity and thereby provide better driving dynamics, it added.

The Neue Klasse generation of BMW M models will also introduce the use of natural fiber elements in their construction, continuing the use of lightweight materials in their high-performance models, albeit now with sustainability in mind.

BMW has been using natural fibers in motorsport since 2019 and says the material offers similar properties to those of carbon fiber, but parts made from natural fibers can be produced with around 40% less CO2e (carbon dioxide equivalent).
