BMW does not say no to a special electric sports car

Burning engine Loyalists will claim that there is no such thing as a ‘nice electric car’, but as a brand that Oxymoron can refute, it is probably BMW. Munich takes the time to launch the first full-fat M without a gas engine, where the M3 EV will not expected until around 2028. If this is the case, it will have something that the ‘Heart of Joy’ is called.

The marketing sense refers to one of the four new “super brains” that BMW will introduce in upcoming Neue Klas -Models, starting with the new IX3 -Crosover. What exactly is it? A mix of hardware and software wizard that is designed to push the dynamic possibilities of electric vehicles to a new level.

‘With 20 times faster computing power, and that in combination with an electric powertrain system, you can realize from stabilization, driving, chassis control and to powertrain controls, a system that has a dynamic [capability] Never seen before, “said Joachim Post, the Chief Technical Officer of BMW, in an interview with Engine.

In a separate media briefing with Australian journalists, Post said Motive Magazine that is technically possible to develop a dedicated performance car on the Neue Class platform instead of just an M version of a mainstream model. However, BMW does not yet commit to such a vehicle, and only emphasizes that the modularity of the architecture makes it ‘feasible’.

‘Electronic control units, for example, a battery cell – all things are the same, but integrated in another package. So for us at BMW it is always the core to think that way: how we can develop a component and scale it on each of our cars. [Neue Klasse] Gives you the opportunity to make scale combinations to make it possible from a business case [perspective]. ‘

Historically, BMW was reluctant to produce a real sports car. Even the mid -engine M1 was plagued by problems after Lamborghini, originally responsible for building it, withdrawn due to financial problems. De Baviers have since flirted several times with the idea, with the most recent effort that the M vision is now.

Displayed here, the plug-in hybrid sports car was almost ready for production at the start of the decade. It came close to receiving the green light, but rising development costs in combination with the COVID-19 Pandemie derailed the project. Although BMW is planning to launch more than 40 cars towards the end of 2027, there will then not be a production version of the M Vision.

A Neue Class -Sports car would be a crown jewel for the renewed line -up of BMW, but no real urgency has been given in previous experiences. The Z4 has not been a strong seller and it is expected that he will bend next year without a direct successor in sight. Looking back, the i8 hardly knew 20,000 units in six years. BMW has spent more than € 10 billion on Neue Class and is aimed at products with a high volume such as SUVs and Sedans to recover its enormous investment.

Yet hope is not lost. The Skytop and Speedtop were essentially resined M8s, but they sold for an unconfirmed € 500,000 each. If customers are willing to pay half a million euros for a BMW, higher UPS can give the confidence to become more special projects. Whether the question would be just as strong for an EV as for a V-8 Targa or shooting brake is another question.
