The St. Louis Blues are no strangers to slow starts, but this season it doesn’t feel like a major turnaround is in store in the second half. As a result, GM Doug Armstrong has made it clear that he is willing to listen to just about anyone on his roster.
Players like Jordan Binnington, Jordan Kyrou and Brayden Schenn have been rumored for quite some time, but it sounds like Armstrong could be willing to go even deeper. Star center Robert Thomas has appeared on TSN insider Chris Johnston’s latest trade board, ranked 11th overall and is now the second-highest ranked Blues player behind only Justin Faulk.
If Thomas were truly available, he would immediately become one of the most intriguing trade assets on the market given his age, contract, and skill set.
wrote Johnston:
“Nothing is off the table in St. Louis, including a potential deal involving the team’s top center. How likely that is depends on how you interpret the fact that his name has started to float back into the conversation with rival teams… It would take a serious offer to get Thomas into the prime of his career, but the Blues are open for business,”
Thomas, 26, is in the third season of the eight-year, $65 million extension he signed with the Blues in 2022. He scored 30 points (10 goals, 20 assists) in 40 games played in 2025-26.
Robert Thomas would incur enormous costs
As Johnston said, it would take a lot to pry Thomas away from St. Louis, but if an opponent comes to the table with the right offer, a deal should be made.
Being in the middle of his prime on a very friendly long-term contract, it makes you wonder why the Blues would be interested in acquiring Thomas at all.
Maybe Armstrong is so fed up with not being able to start a season on time that he wants to send a message. On the other hand, no matter how good Thomas is, he’s never going to be the best player on a championship team, so maybe he realizes they’ve reached their ceiling with this group.
Either way, expect almost every team in the league to make inquiries. Thomas may not be the most recognized name, but he is definitely one of the best centers in hockey that doesn’t get talked about enough.
