Blue Jays Nation’s Top 25 Canadian Baseball Prospects for 2026: #24 Indigo Diaz

This next installment of the 2026 version of Blue Jays Nation’s Top 25 Canadian Baseball Prospects List features a pitcher who has been floating around Minor League Baseball and is a name that may already be familiar to baseball fans north of the border.

#24 – Indigo diaz

Place of residence: North Vancouver, BC
Organization: Arizona Diamondbacks
Preliminary version: 27th round, 2019 (ATL)
Position: Relief pitcher
Bats/throws: Right/Right

Indigo Diaz early established itself as one of the top amateur guns in Canada. At Handsworth Secondary School, the North Vancouver native was named Provincial Pitcher of the Year and Provincial MVP, serving as team captain during his junior and senior seasons. He carried that success over to summer ball with the Coquitlam Reds, posting a 9-1 record, 1.24 ERA and 104 strikeouts in 73 innings.

Diaz’s dominance continued at Iowa Western Community College, where he became one of the top JUCO pitchers in the country. His sophomore campaign stood out as he posted an 11-1 record with a 1.52 ERA and a whopping 14 K/9, helping the Reivers to the JUCO World Series and earning NJCAA All-American honors. That performance raised his profile and led to a transfer to Michigan State University’s Division I program.

After transferring, Diaz continued to refine his craft against Big Ten competition, eventually moving to the Spartans’ closer role during his junior year. His 6-foot-4 frame and mid-90s fastball attracted professional interest, leading the Atlanta Braves to select him in the 27th round of the 2019 MLB Draft.

After the lost 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Diaz worked his way back into shape in the Braves system, pitching at the High-A and Double-A levels. He was traded to the New York Yankees organization prior to the 2023 season, although his year was shortened by season-ending Tommy John surgery.

Season 2025

Despite the roadblocks, Diaz spent the 2025 campaign with Double-A Somerset in the Yankees system and provided one of the strongest seasons of his professional career. Over 52 1/3 innings, he posted a 2.58 ERA and a 1.11 WHIP. Diaz’s arsenal is built around a fastball and slider that serve as his primary swing-and-miss pitch, especially against right-handed hitters, and before 2025 he had never posted a strikeout rate below 9.8 K/9.

That season, his strikeout rate dropped to 7.9 K/9, but this was accompanied by improved command and efficiency, which limited hard contact and allowed him to work consistently in leverage situations. The result was his first 50-plus innings season in professional baseball.

Looking ahead to 2026

After the 2025 season, Diaz opted for free agency and signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks, marking the final stop in a professional journey that tested his ability to adapt. At 27, he profiles as veteran bullpen depth in the upper minors, with the physical tools and resume to potentially break into the MLB late in the season.

Diaz is also a familiar name to Team Canada fans. During the World Baseball Classic 2023he appeared in two relief outings and posted a 2.70 ERA as Canada looks to advance beyond pool play in the upcoming tournament.
Diaz’s consistent production at every stop in professional baseball, combined with his impressive 2025 campaign, has earned him a spot on Blue Jays Nation’s Top 25 Canadian Prospects list after he honorable mention last year. If his command continues to improve and his stuff plays against top-level hitters, Diaz remains a legitimate candidate to contribute meaningful innings within the Diamondbacks organization in 2026.
