By winning it East, the Blue Jays allowed the wildcard round and to get some necessary free time before the ALS starts on Saturday. The longer break created some hope that Bo Bichette (which has not played since 6 September because of a left PCL disposal) can become healthy enough to be part of the first postseason selection of Toronto, but at the moment it seems that the short stop is not ready.
Jays Manager John Schneider told The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon And other reporters who still have to work Bichette as part of his recovery process. Schneider and GM Ross Atkins were both, as Bannon said, “vague and carefully optimistic” about the availability of Bichette, but it is difficult to imagine that Bichette will be admitted to the Roster if he cannot run yet. Such a lack of mobility would of course exclude a return to shortstop obligation, and even a alone-DH roll seems like a long shot. Despite the importance of Bichette’s bat for the line -up of Toronto, it hurts the general flexibility of the Jays by devoting a schedule to someone who plays under what apparently would be serious limitations.
Schneider said that a decision about Bichette’s status will only be made tomorrow, and the Blue Jays do not have to officially announce their ALDS selection until Saturday morning. Some game chance of not playing the Jays’s hand over Bichette about the advance of the Red Sox and Yankees, but for now the question can be if Bichette will even be available for the ALCs if the Jays move forward.
Bichette’s Bounce-Back season was a large part of the Run from the Blue Jays to the Divisiekroon. After an injury-in 2024 with an injury-in-marred year, Bichette recovered to touch .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs of more than 628 plate performances this year, with a 134 WRC+ that 20th was among all qualified battles people in baseball. Getting Bichette back, even in a bat capacity like a DH would be welcome news for the Jays, but all this uncertainty about one of their top players is a cloud that depends on the chances of the club.
In a more positive injury update, Chris Bassitt is planned to pitch multiple innings during an Intrasquad game today, which will be the last checkpoint for the availability of the right-handed for the ALDS grid. Bassitt threw on September 18 for the last time and was then (with retroactive effect) placed on the 15-day wounded list the next day due to lower back inflammation. The timing has been worked out well enough that the minimum of 15 days expires just before game 1 of the ALSs, and Bassitt is expected to be part of the Toronto pitching mix.
How the pitching plans of the Jays will shake, is the gamble of everyone, beyond the expectation of Kevin Gamman And Shane Bieber Acting in traditional starting roles. A healthy Bassitt can be seen as a favorite for another rotation place, and the Blue Jays also weigh both ends of the experience spectrum in future Hall-of-Famer Max Scherzer and Rookie Trey YESAVAGE.
One pitcher who will not be involved in at least the ALDS schedule Jose BerriosThe one on the 15-day IL went on 25 September due to inflammation in his throwing arch. The first scans did not indicate structural damage, and Sportsnet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith Writes that this diagnosis was supported as soon as Berrios received a second opinion. Since Berrios did not start throwing, it is difficult to project whether or not it could be available if the Blue Jays make deeper until October. De Jays had already made the decision to move the old starter to a bullpen role a few weeks ago, and Berrios would probably continue to work as a reliever during the late season.
