Chicago fire brigade officers say that the fire that led to the death of a long -term departmental captain has intentionally been set.

A spokesperson for the Chicago fire brigade said that an investigation has unveiled the fire that led to the death of the 54-year-old captain David Meyer started “by human action,” and that the case is now being handled as a criminal investigation.

According to a statement, the office of the fire brigade, with the help of the ATF, determined that the fire was caused by “inflammation of the contents of a garbage bin by human action.”

Earlier on Wednesday, fire brigade officers said there have recently been several reports of garbage cans in the area.

Meyer, a 28-year-old veteran of the department, died in the Stroger hospital after the fire near Austin and left a woman, three daughters and a son.

A Chicago Fire Captain and a four -year -old father died in the service on Wednesday when a garage collapsed when firefighters were assessing damage after they had brought a fire earlier that morning.

The fire started at around 4.15 am in a garage in the 5500 block of West Crystal Street. A Mayday call was published at about 5:40 am.

“Companies had started storage and revision outside the garage when the garage collapsed,” said fire commissioner Annette Nance-Holt during a press conference Wednesday.

Meyer was brought to Stroger, where he was declared dead on Wednesday morning.

Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago called Meyer ‘A Hero, Courageous, Brave and Bold’.

“This is a huge loss for the Meyer family, for the Chicago fire brigade and the entire city Chicago … This is really a remarkable will of those who love this city and those who are willing to make this sacrifice to keep us all safe,” he said.
