The Chicago Blackhawks and Anaheim Ducks faced off in a matinee showdown at the United Center on Sunday, November 30. Heading into the game, the Ducks were coming off a six-game homestand, winning four of six. Meanwhile, the Blackhawks were trying to break a five-game losing streak.

This was the second of three games this season between these two clubs, the first of which the Ducks lost 2-1 in overtime on October 19, also at the United Center. Former Blackhawks head coach Joel Quenneville, now the Ducks’ new bench boss, wanted to win in his old barn. Another former Blackhawk, Petr Mrazek, was in net for Anaheim, while Spencer Knight manned the squad for Chicago.

Once all was said and done, the Blackhawks came away with a dramatic 5-3 win. Let’s get to the summary.

Ducks win the first period

The Ducks got off to a fast and furious start, literally. Cutter Gauthier scored just 15 seconds, assisted by Troy Terry and Leo Carlsson. At the 47th second, Olen Zellweger took over the honors, assisted by Terry and Gauthier.

Less than a minute into the game, the Ducks led 2-0 and Gauthier and Terry already had two points that day.

To make matters worse for the home team, Anaheim scored again at the 10:25 mark of the first period. Chris Kreider hit one in through the goalmouth to make it 3-0. It was Kreider’s 600th career point. He was assisted by Beckett Sennecke and Mason McTavish.

But the Blackhawks got some life back when they scored on the power play near the end of the first frame. Tyler Bertuzzi redirected a Frank Nazar shot. Connor Bedard was credited with the secondary assist.

Nevertheless, the Ducks appeared to be in control, taking a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

Blackhawks win the second frame

In the second frame, the Blackhawks got another one back with a two-on-one breakaway. Rookie Ryan Greene got the score on a very unselfish pass from Bedard. It was Greene’s second goal in as many games.

The comeback was completed with a power play goal from Colton Dach. He was assisted by Teuvo Teravainen and defender Artyom Levshunov.

Just like that, what looked like a Ducks defeat turned into a 3-3 draw before the second intermission.

Blackhawks take the third period and win

In the third period, the Ducks’ Alex Killorn appeared to have scored a shorthanded goal, but the play was ruled offside and no goal was scored. With just over 10 minutes left in the game, Ducks’ netminder Mrazek appeared as if he pulled something and was replaced by Ville Husso.

Shortly afterwards, Bedard took advantage of Duck’s turnover to put the Blackhawks ahead, 4-3. It was the fifteenth goal of the season for the twenty-year-old.

But alas, he wasn’t ready yet. The Ducks pulled Husso and Bedard scored the empty net goal at 6:05 of the third to make the score 5-3 to the Blackhawks. It was Bedard’s fourth point of the game (2 goals and 2 assists).
