Solar energy has always felt a broken promise – it has a lot of potential but never delivers completely. A team from the University of Rochester, led by optica expert Chunlei Guo, may have just changed that. They have made solar -thermo -electric generators (Stegs) with Black Metal that are 15 times more powerful than previous generations.

Stegs differ from the solar panels on your roof. While standard photovoltaic panels directly convert sunlight into energy, Stegs convert every type of heat, solar energy or otherwise into power. They work by sandwiching by semiconductor materials between a hot and a cold side, and the temperature difference generates electricity via the Seebeck effect.

Until now, Steg’s have been miserably inefficient, so that less than 1% sunlight is converted into electricity compared to 20% of the residential solar panels. The Guo team saw that gorge and decided to completely think of the hot and cold sides again.

First they changed heat -resistant tungsten to black metal with the help of lasers pulsing on a quadriljoenste of a second. This allowed them to etch small structures on the surface of the tungsten, which resulted in nano structures, which absorbs the metal sunlight as a sponge, while minimizing heat lengths that do not contribute to the production of energy.

They then combined this black metal with a piece of plastic to create what Guo calls a ‘mini -greenhouse’. Just like the greenhouse of a farmer of the heat of a farmer for plants, this plastic layer runs up on the hot side of the Steg, so that the temperature remains high enough to maximize the Seebeck effect.

On the other side of the Steg they took the cold side. They just took aluminum and used the same ultrasal lasers to create nanostructures that increase its cooling capacity. This laser-Eletest aluminum works as a supercharged cooling body, so that heat is released twice as quickly as a regular aluminum as a regular aluminum. By keeping the cold side as cold as possible, it widens the temperature gap between the two sides, necessary for more power.

To test their creation, they carried out a simple experiment: they used their STEG to provide an LED with power. The results were great. Their device could feed the LED on full brightness with much less sunlight than older stegs required. But it is more than just brighter lights. This compact, lightweight generator can feed weather sensors, smart devices and even off-grid systems in remote areas.

Guo’s Black Metal is not only for small devices; It can lead to larger systems that compete with regular solar panels. The focus of the team on thermal management – how heat is absorbed and released – is a whole new way of thinking about solar energy. For years, researchers have worked on semiconductor progress with small victories. The approach of Guo skips all of that and shows that sometimes the biggest breakthroughs arise from looking at a problem from a different perspective.
