Prior to a high-level meeting between the organizations of Manipur in the organizations of Manipur and the Ministry of the Interior (MHA) in New Delhi on the continuous crisis in the state, the Bharatiya Janata party has convened a meeting of its legislators to insist on the restoration of an elected government in the state.

“The BJP laws have already indicated the center that they are ready to form a popular government,” said former minister -President Biren Singh, spoke with reporters after the meeting.

The meeting comes as part of the wider route map of the BJP for repairing peace and administration in Manipur, which has been the rules of the president since 13 February after months of ethnic unrest. Biren Singh resigned as Chief Minister on 9 February in the midst of increasing pressure and internal deviating opinions within the BJP.

Singh welcomed the planned conversations between important social organizations – Coordination Committee for Manipur Integrity (Cocomi), All Manipur United Clubs’ Organization (Amuco) and Federation of Civil Society Organization (FOCs) – and the MHA, who calls it a constructive step in the direction of reconciliation and peace.

Monday’s meeting in Delhi marks the third dialogue round between the civil society organizations and central officials with regard to the crisis of the state.

Manipur has been without a functioning elected government since the rule of the president, after the ethnic violence that broke out on 3 May 2023.

Of the 60 seats in the legislative meeting of Manipur, people are currently empty because of the death of NPP MLA N. Kayisii (the tadubi constituency). Among the 59 remaining members, 22 BJP MLAs attended the meeting of Sunday.

Eight BJP MLAs were absent, reportedly due to health problems or previous obligations. The BJP owns 32 seats in the house, supported by five former JD (U) MLAs who later became members of the party and bring its effective force to 43 MLAs.

Other parties in the meeting are the National People’s Party (6), JD (U) (6), Naga People’s Front (5), Kuki People’s Alliance (2), Indian National Congress (5) and three Independents. Despite some alliance partners and an independent MLA that withdraws support, the BJP is retained a majority.

However, there will continue to be an important political gap. Ten Kuki-Zo MLAs, including seven of the BJP-staying, demand a separate administration for their community, for which the status of the trade union area argues in response to the ethnic unrest.

BJP president A Sharda Devi repeated the dedication of the party for the public sentiment.

“To form a popular government, public support is essential. During the recent meeting with central leaders, they recognized the feelings of the people of Manipur who long for the restoration of a popular government,” she said.

The developments come in the midst of growing calls from both civil society and political actors for the restoration of democratic governance in the state affected by conflicts.
