Two sides at opposite ends of the League One table, Stockport will travel to London Road on Thursday evening when they meet Peterborough.
Starting with the home side, while Peterborough might have opened the 2025/26 season in the midst of a public nightmare, the Posh have certainly made a vital turn of events of late. Luke Williams’ men were last seen completing a 2-1 EFL Trophy win at Crawley and are enjoying a real revival. Despite still struggling in the relegation places, the former Swansea boss has made an immediate impact since arriving at London Road. While they made a real statement earlier this month when they powered their way to a 5-0 League One draw against AFC Wimbledon, Peterborough have now won all their previous three consecutive outings in all competitions by an aggregate score of 8-1. Likewise, Thursday’s hosts, by winning four of their last five outings, have also found a recent clinical advantage in the final third. Despite facing what looks set to be a stern investigation in midweek, it must be stressed that Williams’ side have scored 11 goals in their previous four clashes at London Road.
As for the visitors, although Stockport suffered play-off heartbreak last season, the Hatters certainly have shown no signs of a hangover this time around. Dave Challinor’s men, who have deservedly received a string of plaudits from England’s third tier, are leading the charge at the top of the League One table and are widely regarded as a standout promotion contender this year. Kicking off November by continuing their FA Cup adventure thanks to a 3-1 win away at Tranmere, Thursday’s guests will be looking to make another statement here. Stockport ended October with a dominant 3-0 draw against Port Vale, winning five of their previous six games in all competitions. With their shock 3-0 thrashing against Luton earlier this month being nothing more than a minor mistake, the Hatters should also be excited by their free-scoring performances in the final third. With 22 goals in League One this season, only two clubs have recorded more goals in the third tier.
