A dual group of legislators has introduced legislation aimed at redeveloping empty buildings in affordable homes.
Reps. Sam Liccardo (D-Calif.), Maria Salazar (R-fla.), Johnny Olszewski (D-MD.) And Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA.) Announced the revitalizing empty Structures Into Desirable Envimes (Reside) act to that WOBILDIEFSS Empty Offices, Malls, Motels and Other Properties Into Homes.
“Because an infection of the home crisis has spread to almost every major American metro, spacious sites with empty office buildings, empty shopping centers and decreasing motels,” said Liccardo. “With Reside we can help to transform ‘Doom loops’ from the city center and shopping centers in flourishing, lively communities strip.”
Salazar said the bill could help improve affordability in its district.
“Home ownership has long been a cornerstone of the American dream. In Miami, that dream has become increasingly unaffordable, especially for young people,” she said. “The revitalizing empty structures in Desirable Environments Act is a two-part, budget neutral and commonsense solution that would increase the offer of housing and make the dream of homeowners a reality.”
Olszewski said that the legislation offers a thoughtful and effective solution for an urgent need – adding that “no family should worry about a warm and safe place to sleep at night.”
“The re -use of empty buildings both meet the growing demand for feasible homes in this economy and revives local spaces,” he said. “I am proud to support this creative legislation to tackle the home crisis that every community affects in our country.”
Fitzpatrick called the affordability of homes “one of the determining challenges of our time.”
“By bridging the gap between under -utilized buildings and unfulfilled housing needs, (the Reside Act) allows local authorities to transform abandoned warehouses, hotels and strip centers into affordable houses without adding a dime expenses,” he said. “We can breathe new life into the main streets, make smarter use of existing infrastructure and more families help reach the American Dream or Handwinenthip.”
The Reside Act Recently advanced in the Senate as part of a two -part party package led by Sens. Mark Warner (D-VA.) And Jim Banks (R-Ind.).
If the law becomes the law, the Housing and Urban Development Department Would give the program Managing – Priority to municipalities with less regulatory barriers for conversions through his home initiative.
