Tarleton State has placed men’s basketball coach Billy Gilispie on temporary administrative leave while the university is investigating a complaint, ESPN reports. Gillispie will enter his sixth season with the Texans. Assistant -coach Gynn Cyprien will serve as an acting head coach in the absence of Gillispie. The university has not provided any details about the nature of the complaint and has not offered a timeline for how long the investigation will take.
Gillispie, 65, has confronted with a career characterized by controversy and health problems. His term of office at Texas Tech (2011-12) included accusations of player abuse, including the force of injured athletes to practice, and he was reprimanded for the extraordinary NCAA exercise limits.
In September 2012 he took an indefinite medical leave after hospitalization for heart -related symptoms and resigned later that year, with reference to health problems. Earlier, during his time in Kentucky (2007-09), Gillispie was rejected after two seasons in the midst of concern about fit and contractual disputes after a campaign in which the Wildcats missed the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1991. He later arranged a lawsuit with the university for almost $ 3 million.

Despite these challenges, Gillispie has a history of success on the field. He received national attention at Utep for the first time, where he led the miners to a conference title and a NCAA tournament in his second season, engineering one of the biggest turnarounds in the NCAA history. On Texas A&M (2004–07) he produced three consecutive 20-win seasons and earned twice Big 12 Coach of the Year Honors, to build a reputation for recruiting top talent and revitalizing struggling programs.
Three years after his departure from Texas Tech In 2012, Gilispie returned to Ranger College, his Alma Mater, where he served as head coach and athletic director. NJCAA sanctions included his term of office there for the use of non -close players.
He was hired by Tarleton State in March 2020 and helped to guide the program during the transition from Division II to Division I. Gillispie has a general record of 78-74 (.513) in five seasons in Tarleton, including two Postseason performances in the CBI and CIT.
Gillispie’s placement comes on leave while the Texans are preparing for the coming season with the first game on SMU on November 3.
