Bill Simmons’ trade idea should have Timberwolves fans dreaming

Despite a 40-point win over the Jazz on Friday, the Timberwolves are off to a mediocre 5-4 start. Minnesota’s point guard play was seen as a weakness even before the season started.

Minnesota fans are starting to dream about adding Ja Morant via trade due to the issues he is seemingly having with the Grizzlies. Bill Simmons is instead proposing a deal in which the Timberwolves acquire Coby White, who has yet to play for the Bulls this season.

Bill Simmons suggests Coby White as a trade candidate

On his podcast, Simmons spoke with Joe House and mentioned five hypothetical NBA trade ideas. One of his deals involved the Timberwolves acquiring White from the Bulls.

“If you send him (Coby White) to Minnesota, a team in dire need of a point guard, you bring back (Donte) DiVincenzo and Rob Dillingham, Simmons suggested. I think I would do that if I was on both teams.”

The 25-year-old White has been out since the start of the season with a calf injury. However, a recent report states that he plans to return during Chicago’s three-game Western Conference road trip that begins on November 16.

The seventh overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, White’s play has skyrocketed over the past two years. In 2024-25, the 6-foot-1 guard averaged a career-high 20.4 points while making nearly three three-pointers per game.

He’s never had big assists, but he’s also spent his career sharing backcourts with key guards who often have the ball, like Lonzo Ball and now Josh Giddey.

White is not yet rumored to be a trade candidate

There are no reports of the Bulls shopping white. Simmons is likely speculating that this could happen because of Chicago’s excellent start without him.

While they lost to the Bucks on Friday, their 6-2 mark is the second-best record in the Eastern Conference, trailing only the 7-2 Pistons. Although Tre Jones doesn’t have White’s attacking qualities, he has done an excellent job filling his role in the starting lineup.

Simmons believes both teams would be inclined to accept a White for DiVincenzo and Dillingham deal. Things could change, but I suspect the Bulls are more likely to say no.

The Timberwolves may also be skeptical about whether this is a deal they should make since White is a free agent after the season. Being a team very close to the second platform, it would be difficult to re-sign him to a market value deal this offseason.

However, expect Minnesota to pop up in point guard trade rumors all season long, especially if the Timberwolves continue their trend of competing against good teams while picking up wins against lower-tier teams.
