Conway had previously smashed four consecutive fifties for Wellington in the 2021 Super Smash, before adding another against Australia in Christchurch. Jacobs brought up his fifth consecutive fifty off 42 balls, drilling Jacob Duffy through extra cover for a boundary. He then led Auckland to victory in a chase of 160 against the Volts, finishing in style with three sixes in his last nine deliveries in Dunedin.
“Yes, it was a lot of fun to contribute to the season and I had a great time. There is no secret to [five fifties in a row]. I think I just had fun and I’m trying to keep it as simple as possible and just do what I can to get the guys over the line. Obviously we were disappointed that we couldn’t do it against the Kings, so it was nice that we could finish the job today,” said Jacobs, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
Jacobs is considered one of the hardest hitters on the cricket ball in New Zealand and even earned an IPL stint with the Mumbai Indians in 2025. At the time, he was still uncapped at international level and found no candidates for the IPL 2026 auction. However, on Monday he showed his talent by following the chase expertly and underlining his value as a match winner.
“Yes, 100% [wanted to be there at the finish]. I think I’ll come early with Chappy, it’s always great to have someone with his experience. He held my head straight and told me, ‘Just keep banging, take a long time and try to hit it as deep as you can.’ So we were able to build that partnership and that was really helpful in the game plan,” Jacobs said.
Jacobs is currently the leading run-scorer in New Zealand’s domestic T20 tournament, with 328 runs from five innings at an astonishing average of 109.33 and a strike rate of 173.54. He will join the Black Caps T20I squad in India for a five-match series despite not being selected for the T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka.
