Sheffield Wednesday can now have a ‘better future’ ahead of them, say former EFL player Jobi McAnuff.

Sheffield Wednesday went into administration at the end of last week. SWFC was subsequently deducted 12 points and is at rock bottom Championship table.

The Owls are crying out for new ownership after Dejphon Chansiri’s controversial spell at Hillsborough. They find themselves in the drop zone along with Sheffield United and Norwich City after their opening twelve games and are now 16 points from safety behind Blackburn Rovers in 21st place.

Henrik Pedersen’s team was defeated 2-1 at home by Oxford United this weekend. Midfielder Sean Fusire scored against the U’s, but ultimately failed to find an equalizer.

Former Cardiff City, Watford and Reading man McAnuff has given his verdict on the South Yorkshire team’s situation, according to a report from Air sports: “Going into administration is not something we want to see for any of our football clubs, especially one this big and well supported – but hopefully this is a low point, a short-term pain and an opportunity with Chansiri out of the picture to move on and get a better future for the football club.”

Sheffield Wednesday at the latest after administration

Sheffield Wednesday should be an attractive club for buyers to buy. SWFC has a large catchment area, a large fan base and potential for future growth.

The past few years have been tough for the Owls under Chansiri. They moved to League One before former manager Darren Moore led them to promotion to the second tier via the play-offs in 2024.

They turned to Danny Rohl as their head coach in October 2023 as they struggled at the bottom of the division. He managed to keep them up against all odds in his first year and in the last campaign his team flirted with the play-offs for a while.

Ultimately, however, they fell short and Rohl, who is now with Rangers in Scotland, left. Pedersen was then was given the full-time position after his stint in the backroom staff team.

What next for Sheffield Wednesday?

Sheffield Wednesday have won just one league match so far this season. SWFC’s selection is thin and they have difficulty with the workload of the matches.

The Owls are back in action this weekend as they look to bounce back from their loss to Oxford United. They face a tough away game at The Hawthorns to play West Brom to kick-start November.

Pedersen’s side could only sign Harry Amass and Ethan Horvath this summer, on loan from Manchester United and Cardiff City respectively. They have since signed Joe Lumley on an emergency move from Bristol City, but that deal has now ended.

Sheffield Wednesday saw a host of key players leave the exit door in the final window, including the likes of Josh Windass, Anthony Musaba and Djeidi Gassama. Those exits have left their ranks extremely worn down, which isn’t ideal.
