Farmingdale, NY – The most iconic square meters at Bethpage Black is not Fairway, Tee or Green. Instead, it is a plate – white panel, black letters, head with ‘warning’ in the red – that looks out over the first tee, which serves as a word of caution (or challenge) for those golfers who are lucky and brave enough to take his brutal test. It reads as follows:
The Black Course is an extremely difficult course that we only recommend for very skilled golfers.
The board is so famous because warning is a built -in part of Bethpage’s black experience. It is often mentioned in compilations of America’s most difficult golf courses, in conversation just behind Bruten such as Oakmont. It is difficult enough that it has not only organized PGA Tour events, but also a PGA championship and two US opens for that. The Black is difficult for both pros and Joes. That’s the point.
But this week? The board is a lie. We undoubtedly have ‘very skilled golfers’, but the ‘extremely difficult course’ did not show up for the first day of the Ryder Cup.
Partly that was because of the weather. Rain buckets rolled on on Wednesday and Thursday, so that the course was searched and that every shot of the approach landed as a marble in Jello – while the most important challenge players in the Fairway were confronted with spider control. The rain also pushed tournament organizers to play lift, clean and place, which resulted in perfect lies. And the circumstances were perfect to score; Friday was hot all day, it didn’t rain and there was hardly any wind.
In part, however, the accessibility of Bethpage was a choice. While the hosts of this event, American leadership was given the opportunity to prepare the course as they saw fit – and they chose to open it wide, so that the penalties were limited for missing the tee with widened fairways and unrecognizable rough rough, which only occasionally served as the only real Hindrance.
Players knew this would come.
“This is not the normal Bethpage Black,” said Harris English Thursday, the day before the event started. “You are going to see much more birdies than you would normally do in the PGA or the US Open.”
Bryson Descivbeau emphasized how difficult the course had been for the PGA 2019 – and how different this week would play. “The golf course was a beast,” he said. “Rough was much longer. This week … The rough is not so punishable.”
Traditionally, there are ways to use the preparation of the benefit of your team, just one of the many benefits in the home run. In Rome, for example, Team Europe limited the number of wedges that players would hit and doubled with the number of long -standing shots, knowing where his players had a statistical lead. It made long par-4s longer and short par-4s shorter and showed players with very little of the Stock 125-Yard closer shots that they see so often on the PGA Tour.
Traditionally there has also been a difference between the profiles of the Americans (longer but wilder hitters) and the Europeans (accurate, smart, cunning) who have borrowed from different styles, of course. In Paris and Rome, the home team grew up and leaned in the home-running features and it was bearing fruit. But this year? The differences are more subtle and more difficult to insulate. Both teams have many bombers. All 24 competitors play the PGA Tour. And so the decision meant to reduce the rough in combination with the decision of nature to alleviate the greens, that Bogeys were not in between on Thursday.
There are a few songs that told the story, including the general score under Par for a large part of Thursday and almost 3 under pargy in Friday.
But here is probably the simplest way to say it: in the morning fourtomes, the most difficult format, Europe’s first three teams played a combined 44 holes. They made 17 Birdies – and zero Bogeys.
It is clear that American leadership thought it was an advantage in their toothless Bethpage setup. Early in this Ryder Cup, however, it is the Europeans who are parties. It is too late to grow the rough – and impossible to start the greens. So the Americans will have to reclaim Bethpage by strengthening their opponents.
