As the winter transfer window approaches in January, Benfica are reportedly keen to return to Union Saint-Gilloise’s prolific striker Promise David. The club was said to have had some interest in David during the summer window, but decided to sign teammate Franjo Ivanovic, a move that did not work out for the club. The 24-year-old Canadian striker joined Sint-Gillis from Estonian side Kalju in the summer of 2024 for a rock-bottom price of €600,000. He signs with the Belgian club until the summer of 2029. David has made 59 appearances for Sint-Gillis in all competitions since joining the club, scoring 31 goals and providing five helpers.
David represents a dynamic addition to Benfica’s attack with his pace, aerial ability and clinical finishing. Sources indicate that Benfica would have to make a potential offer of 15 to 20 million euros to get Sint-Gillis to the negotiating table. A move for David would strengthen the club’s number nine position and provide competition for current starter Vangelis Pavlidis.
This move would likely coincide with a summer loan for Franjo Ivanovic. The 22-year-old Croatian, signed from Sint-Gillis for €22.8 million this summer, has struggled for form and minutes under Jose Mourinho, scoring just four goals in a limited number of appearances. A loan for regular playing time would free up a roster spot while freeing up wages.
Benfica fans would hope that this swap would revive their title challenge in the Portuguese league, where they trail current leaders FC Porto by six points in 11 games in the season.
