Americans bloom on the WTA 1000 China, with 4 players in the quarterfinals, and on Thursday two went to the semi-final-Coco Gauff and Amanda Anisimova with victories over Eva Lys and Jasmine Paolini respectively.
I am happy with how I played. I think I am confident in my game [was important]. I was not too passive when I was in charge, I played a passive point in the last game, but then I played tennis well. Coco Gauff
Gauff, the title defender, made the last 4 for the 3rd year in a row after beating the hard-hitting German, Eva Lys, 6-3 6-4, while her next opponent, Anisimova, collected to beat the persistent Italian, Jasmine Paolini, 6-7 (4) 6-3 6-4, in a tight agreement.
The 2nd placed Gauff again suffered from her serve and admitted 7 breaking point opportunities in Beijing, but Lys, a 23-year-old who was looking for her first career-WTA title, could only turn 3 and drop her own serve against the French open champion.
“She is a tough opponent, she fled some incredible photos,” said Gauff, who offers her 11th career title. “I did my best to stay aggressive. Just staying confident in my game and not being too passive if I have the lead.”
Handstand The barrage of electricity generated by Lys, Gauff came within an hour and 28 minutes after she was made to work hard through their quarterfinals when she took a step in the direction of defending her China open title.
The tone of the match was set early with the first point, a 16-to-tarte lungbesel of a rally in which Lys made her aggressive intentions crystal clearer, but the German was refused by a great Lob and Forehand Put-Away by Gauff.
Ranked 66, Lys did not falter her total attack, and for pieces of the competition, with her count of 14 winners hiding the number of rallies in which Gauff was forced into the mistakes by her ruthless pace, often after exchanges of more than 10 shots.
Gauff’s refusal to press under the pressure and her control on the run firmly held, which caused different breathtaking points, and the American won the best of it, suddenly switching from strength to finesse with a perfectly cut drop shot to break 3-1 in the first set.
That match was the start of a 5-break run in the first set, mirrored in the second by 3 consecutive breaks.
Lys was determined to hang in and clamped, but in the end Gauff held her lead and retained control over the game as a whole.
The German played her role in various stunning points, but could not reach the level of consistency that was necessary to hit Gauff and ended with 48 casual mistakes.
In the end, the world took No. 38 minutes to overcome her German opponent, to break Lys 3 times in the opening set and to convert 3 of her 4 breaking point opportunities.

After she found her reach on serving in the second, while she damped a few holds, Gauff had a short wobble and coughed a few double mistakes to add a little late drama, but, serving for the game at 5-4, the American kept her courage to close the victory full of confidence.
“I am happy with how I played,” said Gauff. “I think I am confident in my game [was important]. I was not too passive when I was in charge, I played a passive point in the last game, but then I played tennis well. “
Gauff, who sometimes struggled with her serve this season, ended with an impressive first serve percentage of 79% before the competition.
The 21-year-old, who was beaten from Wimbledon’s opening round after winning the French Open earlier this year, is now the highest player who is still left in the tournament.
Gauff continues to her 4th semi-final of 2025, and her first from Klei since winning last year’s WTA final in Riyadh, while now also a 14-1 career record in Beijing, where she has made at least the last 4 in each of her 3 performances, the first player to make this since Jelena Jelena Jelena Jelena Jelena Jankovic.
The No 2 seed is offered to successfully defend a title for the 2nd time in her career, after Auckland in 2023 and 24.

Gauff is then confronted with her fellow American and 3rd seed Amanda Anisimova, the Wimbledon and US Open who had to dig deep to find her way along Paolini, the 6th placed Italian, who refused until the end of their last 8 match on Thursday evening.
In just their 2nd meeting, 4 years after Anisimova defeated Paolini in straight sets at Clay in Palermo, Italy, it was a will from the start, but the American prevailed to continue her dream season after scraping the 2-hour 47 minutes Barn-Burner.
“She is a difficult opponent to face,” said Anisimova afterwards. “It has been a while since I played her and had everything today.”
Both held in the first 6 games, and it was Anisimova who earned her first break in the 7th game, before they save 2 breaking points to hold for a 5-3 lead, but she was unable to close the first set.
Paolini held down from 15-30 and broke back to 30 in the 10th game to draw level at 5-5, only to go 0-30 in the next and saved 2 breakpoints to eventually land in the Tiebreak.
The Italian ran to 3/0 in the breaker and then went up 5/2 with 3 mini-breaks, and although Anisimova pulled one back for 3/5, the 6th seed sealed the set, 7/4, with her 4th mini-break.
Anisimova gathered from 0-40 in the second game of the second set to break Serve for 2-0 and then went up a double break in the 4th to racing to a 4-0 lead when the Italian seemed to be tired of the long rallies, although she managed to retire one of the pauses to the 5th game.
Anisimova saved a breaking point in the 7th to serve after Deuce for 5-2, and served the set to level procedure.
The American then went on an early break to love in the first match of the decision maker, but Paolini found her second wind and converted her second Break-back point to draw level at 1-1.
She saved 2 more in the 7th game to keep Serve for 4-3, and Anisimova was in trouble, 15-40 down, on her serve, but she issued 6 breaking points to bind the set to 4-4.
Anisimova, both physically and mentally, appeared, both physically and mentally.

The victory sends Anisimova to the China Open semi-final and, more importantly, officially hits her ticket to the WTA final in Riyadh for the first time in her career.
“It was a goal that I set myself at the beginning of the year,” said Anisimova after the game. “I think it was actually one of the few goals I made, so I am super excited. And I am excited to continue here too. I really like playing in Beijing, so I am enthusiastic about the semi -final.”
Anisimova will be confronted with Gauff in an All-American Affair, in what will be her 6th semifinal performance of the year, her most in one season.
The two have split their earlier meetings, in which Gauff won on Clay and Anisimova who will take their most recent meeting in Wimbledon in 2022.
“I am excited to play coco,” said Anisimova. “Every time we play it is a very tough match, so it will be fun to play another American here.”
In the other half of the draw, Sonay Kartal in Great Britain will take on Friday, at around 8 a.m., Linda Noskova against Linda Noskova from the Czech Republic in her quarterfinals, prior to the fully American meeting between Jessica Pegula and Emma Navarro.
