Ultimately, Philippe Martinez will not be sent to a correctional facility. The former Secretary General of the CGT (2015-2023), prosecuted in a defamation case, had to appear before the Paris court on Thursday 16 and Friday 17 October. But the man behind the complaint, a well-known activist from the same union, announced his withdrawal a week before the hearing. The trial will therefore not take place.
The proceedings against Mr Martinez – as well as two other people – follow comments he did not make but for which he must take responsibility. In January 2020, during the congress of the departmental union CGT in Paris, participants distributed a leaflet with the following headline: “No attackers at the CGT.” No name appears, but everyone knows who the target is: Régis Vieceli, head of CGT-Waste and Sanitation at the City of Paris. The text refers to an altercation that took place in 2016 between him and an activist from CGT-Petite Enfance. He was then accused of grabbing her hair before pushing her onto a table. A complaint had been filed. Classification without further action.
