India will defend the T20 World Cup title in less than five months. Prior to the selection framework, news has emerged that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has approached again Mrs. Dona Being a mentor for the national team.
During the World Cup 2021 T20, the former India captain had worked in the VAE as a mentor, where Virat Kohli and Ravi Shastri served as a captain and coach respectively. However, the men in blue could not get the knockouts. During the tournament they lost through 10 wickets of arch -rivals Pakistan. This was their first defeat against the men in Green in the World Cups.
Reported by Cricblogger, a BCCI source confirmed that Dhoni was offered the position. “Dhoni is offered again to guide the Indian cricket,” said the source. The board believes that its strategic mind, the composite leadership and the experience in winning high -pressure tournaments can be useful to prepare the team for a different world title challenge.
Insiders, however, believe that Dhoni may be reluctant to accept the offer because of the presence of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the team. While Gambhir and Dhoni share mutual respect for their contribution to the Indian cricket, they are expected to have ideological differences that arise from their match days.
Although India could not go further than the group stage in the World Cup 2021 T20, the service of Dhoni was praised as a mentor by many players who praised him to give valuable insights about the game.
The team, which is expected to be chosen for the upcoming edition, could have many young people, and the addition of Dhoni can do wonders for them. However, that is only possible if Gambhir and Dhoni work coherently as a unit.
Suryakumar Yadav-guided India’s next assignment is the Asia Cup, which starts on September 9. India is placed in group A with the VAE, Pakistan and Oman. The defending champion will start their campaign on 10 September when they are opposite the VAE in the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
