Some interesting comments from this BBC Sport pundit on Newcastle United.
Chris Sutton speaks ahead of this afternoon’s match.
Newcastle United versus Crystal Palace at St James’ Park.
A 3pm kick-off on Sunday afternoon as Eddie Howe and his players head into their first match of 2026.
With eight places, but only four points between 13th-placed Newcastle United and the top five, this is such a tight Premier League table.
United must win and follow up on Tuesday’s victory over Burnley.
With Leeds Palace next at St James’ Park, followed by Wolves at rock bottom, these Premier League games present a great opportunity.
Eddie Howe and Newcastle United have won their last three home games against Crystal Palace, with the most recent wins coming 4-0 and 5-0 against the Eagles.
Chris Sutton predicts ‘only’ a 3-0 home win this time and we are all happy to settle for that.
The man from BBC Sport says: “Crystal Palace are another team I’ve often been wrong about lately. They’re on a dismal run, with just one point from their last four games. I should have thought about it more when I made my predictions, as they’re sorely missing the firepower of Ismaila Sarr, who is away at Afcon with Senegal. Brennan Johnson will add some new legs to the Eagles’ attack, but I actually think Newcastle will run away with this one.”
In all competitions, Oliver Glasner’s side have lost four and drawn two in their last six games, with no wins.
As for United, Chris Sutton adds: “I always like Newcastle to score at home and also overwhelm teams, but at times this season they have struggled to keep games under control. This time, however, I am backing them to do all of the above. Eddie Howe’s side beat Palace 5-0 last season and this should be another convincing win.”
Unlike Crystal Palace, Newcastle United finally sees a number of players off the injury list and hopefully enough options for Eddie Howe to move forward.
Newcastle have scored at least two goals in each of their last ten home games in all competitions, winning eight and drawing two. There have been no more defeats at SJP since September.
