A yearling of £ 30,000 that turned out to be a classic winner, addicted Phil Cunningham the racing game 20 years ago. A similar smart purchase gave the owner one of his best days on the track on the last day of Glorious Goodwood.
Two tribes, one of the three runners in the colors of Cunningham in the steward ‘Cup, won the £ 75,000 first prize in a valuable handicap on Ascot last week and added £ 125,000 for this function race with an emphatic defeat of two and a quarter of the defeat of Strike ed.
His two stable companions on the Richard Spencer Yard exceeded the line in the fourth and fifth. “He was a foal of four grains,” said Cunningham. “That makes it even sweeter.”
Better before Cunningham, two tribes is Rajasinghe, who won the Coventry Stakes 2017 in Royal Ascot for the owner in a course record time. Cunningham was so frustrated about the lack of interest of breeders in Rajasinghe in the early years of his studio career that he announced this year that he would offer his services for free.
“It’s huge,” he said. “We believed in the horse, but unfortunately not many others, so it’s great to see that he is starting to get some results. He is still a track record holder at Royal Ascot and Three Grand [per cover] I couldn’t give him away, so in the end I gave him away.
“He did 58 covers after we did the free deal and at least I know that he will have some runners on the track in a few years. If we hadn’t made that decision, he would have been sub-10.”
It was Cockney Rebel, the winner of the 2,000 Guineas in England and Ireland in 2007 and the first horse Cunningham owned, which gave a huge kickstart to his career on the peat. The foal is reminded in the name of his rebel races and since then “it has just become bigger and bigger”.
“It’s my passion and luckily it’s not my job,” said Cunningham, the founder and chief executive of an insurance company ,. “That makes it a bit easier to speculate. We have changed the policy [two years ago]. This is the second year in which we tried to buy a better quality of horse, spent more money. I wanted to come on days like today, you will be spoiled if you get a preference for it.
“We will invest again this year at Jaarlingverkoop. We already have six home breaks to come in as two -year -olds.”
Wardah could be a horse to pay attention in the last three months of the season after Owen ‘light -racing three -year -old on a mile and three quarter in the ultimate decisive style in the two Lillie Langtry Stakes group stepped. Wardah has a mention in the Group One Yorkshire Oaks this month, but the Fillies & Mares event on Ascot on Champions Day in October is a more likely assignment.
