Bangladesh Batter Mohammad Mithun has been chosen as the new president of the cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB), the body that represents the professional cricketers of the country. The elections, which was held on Thursday, saw Mithun win a victory over his opponent.
For almost a decade, CWAB was led by the former captain Naimur Rahman and Debabrata Pal van Bangladesh, who took the duties after an unofficial annual general meeting in 2014. However, with the fall of the previous government and Naimur Rahman’s subsequent disappearance of public life, the association was trouble. To restore order, an ad hoc 13-person committee led by Selim Shahed was formed earlier this year to hold new elections. The mood became a turning point, because the current players took the lead in changing the future of the association.
The presidential match was the most important point of the elections, where Mithun was abandoned against the former cricket player and the current match referee Selim Shahed. Of the 215 eligible voters, 190 cast their votes in the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, with Mithun gaining a victory with 154 votes at 34.
Two ballot papers were declared invalid, as a result of which his victory margin of 120 votes reflect the strong confidential players who were placed in his leadership. After his victory, Mithun emphasized the need for peace between CWAB and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
“I have to take care of the interest of the cricketers as I represent them. CWAB and BCB are like a family and there should not be a hole, because BCB is our guardian and we can always increase our question to our guardian,” said Mithun after he was chosen as citied by Cricbuzz.
The other functions in the 11-person executive committee were filled in unhindered
While the presidential function was closely disputed, the rest of the functions in the 11-person executive committee were filled without opposition. Former opener Shahrar Hossain Bidyut became the senior vice-president and the current Wicketkeeper of Bangladesh Nurul Hasan Sohan was appointed vice-president. National stars such as Najmul Hossain Shanto, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Akbar Ali, Rumana Ahmed, Shamsur Rahman Shuvo, Irfan Sukur, Khaled Mashud Pilot and Imrul Kayes were also chosen as executive members.
The election process itself was a memorable occasion, which participated in earlier and current players, including senior names such as Tamim Iqbal, which, despite the fact that he was a leadership role due to a conflict of interest, was present during the procedure.
