Lisa Millar visits the largest inland waterway in Australia, the Gippsland -Leren in Victoria.

This week on Weigh backLisa Millar visits the beautiful Gippland -Leren in Victoria.

It is more than 100 kilometers and is the largest domestic waterway in Australia, but it largely flies under the radar. It is here, Lisa finds a community that loves the unique environment they call at home and the nature that supports it.

Lisa touches the water and sailed with classic boat builder, Clive Bury in “Rita” his 125-year-old wooden fishing boat. Like many people here, Clive has the spirit of the lakes running through his veins. Together they go to the isolated Pelican Island, which has transformed the community – converted an area of abandonment into a refuge for birds.

It’s all about the water in this episode, while Lisa jumps on board another boat, this time Dr. Kate. When Kate started studying the local dolphins in 2003, only two types of bottlenosis dolphins were known in the world. However, she soon made an incredible discovery, finding a completely new kind of dolphin in the Gippsland -Meren. Kate called it the Burrunan Dolphin. It is now considered one of the rarest dolphins in the world.

From one rare species to the other, Lisa goes on a nocturnal search in search of the endangered Kikkerkikker. But will she be so lucky to spot one of these remarkable critters?

8 p.m. Thursday at ABC.
