AWS builds DNS backstop for times when the weak East US region fails

The cause of major Internet outages is often the domain name system (DNS) and/or problems in Amazon Web Services’ East US region. The cloud giant has now made a change that will make its own role in such outages less painful.

As explained on a Wednesday afterAWS customers told the cloud giant “they need additional DNS resiliency capabilities to meet their business continuity requirements and regulatory compliance obligations.”

“Organizations in regulated industries such as banking, FinTech and SaaS want the confidence that they can make DNS changes even during unexpected regional disruptions, allowing them to quickly provision standby cloud resources or reroute traffic when necessary,” the release adds.

AWS’s answer to these needs is a feature “designed to provide a recovery time objective (RTO) of 60 minutes during service outages in the eastern US.”

Elsewhere in the post, AWS says the feature is focused on “DNS changes that customers can make within 60 minutes of a service outage in the eastern US.”

That still leaves plenty of time for issues in the cloudy region that could cause a wide radius of outages and service disruptions – and the potential for worse outages if AWS doesn’t meet its RTO.

The mere fact that AWS created this service speaks to the long history of problems in US East, including the DynamoDB debacle on October 20 a VM problem a few days laterplus significant disruptions 2021 And 2023.

AWS was of course aware of these problems, and as early as 2022, analyst firm Gartner warned its clients that US East represents a weak point in the Amazon cloud, compromising its ability to address crises.

But last year, AWS told The registry that the scale of US East is no less reliable than that of the other regions, but it operates on such a colossal scale that there is a stricter emphasis on cloud services than on the smaller installations.

And here we are, less than six weeks after a particularly serious problem in the eastern US drew AWS criticism, and the cloud giant has found a way to increase resilience. ®
