Avalanche puts surprise name in play ahead of trade deadline

1 minute, 32 seconds Read

According to a renowned Avs insider Adrian Dater“I hear Val Nichushkin could suddenly be in play as an #Avs trade piece.” Valeri Nichushkin has been a top offensive star for the Avalanche in the past, but he also has a history of off-ice issues. If he suddenly comes into play as a trade figure, it will be intriguing to see how much interest there is and what the Colorado Avalanche could expect in return.

This rumor comes amid the team’s continued push for the playoffs, with the trade deadline approaching and many expecting the Avs to be active. Nichushkin (soon to be 31) is in the fourth year of his eight-year, $49 million ($6.125 million AAV) extension, with a modified no-trade clause (M-NTC) that gives him some say in every move.

In 51 games this season, Nichushkin has 12 goals and 36 points. This is also a multiple goalscorer of more than 20 goals. When he is on, he offers strong two-way play. That said, teams won’t be able to look past his previous on-ice issues (including stints with the Player Assistance Program).

Valeri Nichushkin Avalanche returns

The Avs have historically been reluctant to move him during those times, likely because they know how productive he can be. He’s a strong player in the playoffs, and giving that up is a risk. Perhaps the Avs have reached a point where they want to make a move, even if it’s a lateral one, to acquire a reliable piece for their 2025-2026 run.

There are no confirmed destinations or packages yet, but this could add up quickly if the Avs want to shake things up for a playoff push or to meet other needs.
