Autoplay is terrible: turn it off for your favorite apps

Streaming services love autoplay. Whether you play a trailer for a show you don’t want to watch or automatically start something else when you’re done watching, autoplay features can quickly become annoying. Here’s how to disable autoplay in your favorite streaming apps.

Turn off autoplay for Netflix

There are two Netflix settings that affect autoplay. One setting prevents Netflix from automatically starting the next episode of a series, and the other prevents previews of shows and movies from automatically playing. You can change these settings on both mobile and web, and the changes will apply to both.

When you disable the settings on web or mobile, these settings should also be applied to your Smart TV app. But even if Autoplay Previews are turned off, your smart TV can still show Autoplay Previews once you select a show or movie in Netflix. To disable autoplay on mobile devices, open the app and select your profile. Tap My Netflix at the bottom right of the screen, then tap the menu icon at the top right of the screen. Select Manage Profiles and choose the profile you want to change. At the bottom of the screen you’ll find the switches to turn off autoplay next episode autoplay and autoplay previews.

Sign in to Netflix in a browser and click the profile icon at the top of the screen. Select Account, choose Profiles from the left menu and select your profile. Choose Playback Settings and turn off Next Episode Autoplay and Autoplay Previews.

Turn off autoplay on YouTube

YouTube is another place where autoplay can become incredibly frustrating. You watch a 30 second video and YouTube keeps showing you more and more videos that you have no interest in at all. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to disable this.

The quickest way to disable autoplay is directly from a video. You should see the autoplay toggle in the on-screen controls. If you disable this switch, automatic playback will stop.

You can also disable autoplay via the app settings. Tap your profile icon and then tap the settings icon at the top. Under Video & Audio Preferences, tap Playback. Turn off Autoplay next video.

Unlike Netflix, YouTube autoplay settings vary by device. For example, you might have autoplay enabled for your mobile app, but disabled for your browser. If you want autoplay to disappear, you’ll need to disable it for each device.

Stop autoplay previews on Prime Video and other streamers

If you’re annoyed by autoplay on other streaming services, you should be able to disable it in most streaming apps. The exact steps depend on the streaming app you use.

To disable autoplay in Firefox, go to Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to the Permissions section and select Autoplay. Click the Default for all websites dropdown and select Block audio and video. You can also apply settings to specific websites.

Sign in to your Prime Video account and click the profile icon at the top of the screen. Select ‘Account & Settings’ and click the ‘Player’ tab. Select the ‘Off’ radio buttons for autoplay and autoplay of video and live events. You can also disable autoplay on mobile by going to Profile > Settings > Autoplay and disabling Allow Autoplay on this device.

For Disney+, you can disable autoplay for the next episode of TV shows and also disable background videos that play on landing pages. These settings should apply to devices using the same account. Open the Disney+ app, tap your profile icon at the bottom of the screen and select Edit Profiles. Choose your profile and disable Autoplay and Background Video.

For Apple TV, applying the settings in the TV app on your phone may sync with other devices, but this is not always the case. You may also need to disable the settings on your other devices. In the TV app you can disable the settings to play the next episode and play a recommendation, but there is also a hidden setting that can stop autoplay previews.

In the Apple TV app, tap the profile icon and you’ll see the Play Next Episode and Play Recommendation toggles. You can find a third toggle by going to Settings > Accessibility > Motion and turning off Autoplay Video Previews.

Block autoplay at the source with browser and device settings

In some cases, it is possible to prevent videos from playing automatically by changing the settings of your browser or device. However, not every device or browser offers these settings.

For Apple devices, as explained above, it may help to go to Settings > Accessibility > Motion and disable Auto-Play Video Previews. You can also disable autoplay of videos in Safari on macOS by going to Safari > Settings > Autoplay and choosing “Never Autoplay” for when you visit other websites or for specific websites you currently have open.

To disable autoplay in Firefox, go to Settings > Privacy & Security, scroll down to the ‘Permissions’ section and select Autoplay. Click the Default for all websites dropdown and select Block audio and video. You can also apply settings to specific websites.

To disable autoplay in Microsoft Edge, click the menu icon and select Settings. Choose ‘Privacy, Search & Services’ from the menu on the left and select Site Permissions. Select All permissions, scroll down and click Autoplay media. Click Check if audio and video play automatically in the Sites drop-down list and select Block. You can also change the settings per site.

Unfortunately, there is nothing in Chrome’s default settings that you can change to disable autoplay for videos. The best you can do is block the sound for specific sites, which isn’t ideal if you want to watch a video on a website without something else automatically playing.

Autoplay may be good for the owners of streaming apps and services, but it’s not always good for consumers. If you get tired of autoplay, you should be able to turn it off and choose what to watch instead.
