Everyone loves holidays. The hot sun, relaxing drinks on a sandy beach and pleasant walks late at night without an alarm clock in the morning equal bliss. It’s great, but once you’ve taken a walk on the beach, chilled by the pool and visited the market once or twice, it can all get a bit repetitive, right?
If that rings true for you, then this car museum Airbnb called Frontier Vintage Station in Gillette, Wyoming might be a better choice for your next vacation spot. If you find yourself tired of the usual holiday destinations such as cafes and tapas bars, take a look outside your room. You’ll be greeted by a pair of treasured and extremely rare classics that almost no one knows about, namely a wonderfully original ’47 DeSoto and a brilliantly restored ’49 Chevy. In addition, there are vintage fuel pumps, bright neon signs and a retro jukebox, all helping to perfectly complete the 1950s atmosphere.
The owner of this dazzling Airbnb is a man named Jeff Wandler. This isn’t just a lucrative business venture for him; it is just a remnant of his passion for classic cars that he would like to share with the rest of the world. By opening this Airbnb with two of his classics on display, Wandler has been able to create a great space for other people who share the same interests as him. It has also created a fascinating talking point in his hometown of Gillette, Wyoming.
A little more about the cars
While the glowing neon signs and retro decor are beautiful to look at, the real stars of the show are of course the cars. They match well, they are both American models from the late 1940s, but in the details they could not be more different.
Coming from one of America’s largely forgotten and irrelevant automakers, the turquoise ’47 DeSoto is what we and Jeff Wandler would call a true survivor. In his words: “I like that it’s a Wyoming car, what we would call a survivor, which means it’s all original. It’s never had any restoration” (per Cowboy stands daily). Cars like this simply don’t exist – an over 75 year old model that has never been painted, never taken apart and whose seats have never even been reupholstered. The model itself is already scarce, but to find one in this condition – and one that spent its entire life in Wyoming – is simply unrepeatable.
Wandler’s restored Chevy pickup, on the other hand, is a completely different beast. Commenting on the car’s condition, Wandler says, “It’s the nicest ’49 Chevy I’ve ever seen. It’s been heavily restored, so a truly professional restoration” (via Cowboy State Daily). It was restored by the late Steve Gaspers and is currently loaned to Wandler and his Airbnb by Gaspers’ wife, Lou, although Wandler has plans to purchase it outright and turn it into a permanent addition.
The property, which is described on Airbnb as a “1,300-square-foot studio-man-cave garage,” can be booked directly via the website. There is also plenty of parking, so guests can travel in style with their own piece of classic Americana. The Airbnb is also located near the Frontier Auto Museum and if you stay at the Airbnb you have free admission.
