More Australians are confronted with anti-Semitism, anti-Arabic racism, anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobic hates, as the commissioner of race discrimination says: “Some government approaches Pit communities to each other”.
The Giridharan Svarama and his team of the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) have found that communities in Australia have felt “dehumanizing” in the midst of conflict in the middle -east.
In a speech to the National Press Club on Wednesday afternoon, Sivaraman urged the government to act on various recommendations to combat racism.

“Every experience of racism is unique to the victim, but the fact remains in these ways more people are damaged than before,” Sivaraman said in his speech.

‘Compare’ Racism

Sivaraman described the world as “Febreele Tijden”.
“The war in Gaza has a frightening increase in anti-Semitism, anti-Arabic racism, anti-Palestinian racism and Islamophobic hatred,” he said.
“The mention of those different forms of racism does not mean that they compare them. The mention of one does not make another invalid.”
Israel has bombed Gaza since the Hamas attack on October 7 in 2023, in which more than 1,200 people, including an estimated 30 children, were killed and more than 200 hostages were taken, according to the Israeli government. According to the Ministry of Health in Gaza, more than 60,430 people have been killed in Gaza since 7 October.

The AHRC has held consultation with members of the Jewish, Palestinian, Arab and Muslim -Australian communities as part of the project with seen and heard.

The initiative funded by the government has discovered that these communities feel dehumanized and “stripped of their humanity”, when suffering is not recognized at home or abroad.
“When the massacre of Jews and Israelis is not recognized by Hamas on October 7, it dehumanizes them – and, by extension, Jewish and Israeli Australians,” he said.
“When the destruction caused by Israel in Gaza – the death of 18,000 children, massive starvation, the destruction of houses – is ignored, the Palestinians dehumanes, and by extension, the Palestinian, Arab and Muslim -Australians who identify with them.”

Israel has consistently rejected accusations that it has fueled a hunger crisis in Gaza instead Hamas of deliberately creating a humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian area.

Recommendations for the government

Sivaraman said he believes that “some government approaches pit communities against each other instead of promoting shared solutions”.
It calls for various important legal and policy changes, such as the introduction of a national framework with 10-year obligations that are recognition of the “systemic and structural nature of racism” and “historical and continuous effects of settlement colonization on First Nations Peules”.
Nine months since the release, the AHRC is still waiting for a commitment of federal and national governments.
Bilal Rauf, a senior adviser from the Australian National Imams Council, said that it is heartless and unrealistic to expect that Australian communities do not feel struck through abroad.

“I think a framework has been brought, and the most important points made are well substantiated, and it is something I agree with,” he said SBS News.

Attempts to combat racism must be ‘First Nations-Centerred’

The framework would also include an agreed national definition of racism for indigenous people.
“There can be no racial justice in Australia without justice for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Therefore Efforts to combat racism in Australia must be centered on First Nations, “said Sivaraman.

“We cannot solve a problem without tackling the cause of the land. And every manifestation of racism in this country stems from the original violence against first peoples.”

Sivaraman said it is vital to look at the past to inform future decision -making.
“We cannot achieve real progress without recognizing the reality of colonization – from slaughter to land theft.
‘Sometimes we have to have difficult conversations. Hearing uncomfortable Truths. But this is not a means to distribute us. It is a powerful act of unity. “
