Australia in a ‘critical time’ to eradicate ‘frightening increase’ of racism, says Commissioner, says

The Giridharan Svarama and his team of the Australian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) have found that communities in Australia have felt “dehumanizing” in the midst of conflict in the middle -east.
In a speech to the National Press Club on Wednesday afternoon, Sivaraman urged the government to act on various recommendations to combat racism.

“Every experience of racism is unique to the victim, but the fact remains in these ways more people are damaged than before,” Sivaraman said in his speech.

‘Compare’ Racism

The AHRC has held consultation with members of the Jewish, Palestinian, Arab and Muslim -Australian communities as part of the project with seen and heard.

The initiative funded by the government has discovered that these communities feel dehumanized and “stripped of their humanity”, when suffering is not recognized at home or abroad.

Israel has consistently rejected accusations that it has fueled a hunger crisis in Gaza instead Hamas of deliberately creating a humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian area.

Recommendations for the government

Sivaraman said he believes that “some government approaches pit communities against each other instead of promoting shared solutions”.
It calls for various important legal and policy changes, such as the introduction of a national framework with 10-year obligations that are recognition of the “systemic and structural nature of racism” and “historical and continuous effects of settlement colonization on First Nations Peules”.
Nine months since the release, the AHRC is still waiting for a commitment of federal and national governments.
Bilal Rauf, a senior adviser from the Australian National Imams Council, said that it is heartless and unrealistic to expect that Australian communities do not feel struck through abroad.
