friendly (n.) – Brit. Whey. A competition (usually in the preseason) that is not part of a serious competition
Friendly competitions for the preseason, in professional and amateur sports around the world, different purposes serve.
For coaching staff it enables them to assess talent in game situations. For players it is a spout for them to gain experience, or even have the chance to make the last team.
For managers, friendly competitions can serve to build a brand. Football teams, especially those who are known worldwide, such as Manchester United and Real Madrid, will play in fast-growing markets such as Australia, the United States, Southeast Asia and the Middle East.
For a while the National Football League would hold a selection of pre-season matches in potential NFL markets such as Louisville, Ky., Raleigh-Durham, NC, Honolulu, San Antonio and Toronto. For years, the NFL in front season was six races – a month and a half. That was when the League season was 14 games. But nowadays, three of those former exhibition data have been moved to the 17-game regular season.
The most extensive preseason in sport is that for Major League Baseball, an Odyssey of six weeks. Pitchers and catchers report to their operation, with position players who reported eight to 10 days later. Ultimately, the Pole of Pro players plays around 30 games, but there are also games with players with less experience, and these groups will ultimately fill in Triple-A, Double-A and Single-A grilles. Others will be assigned to extensive spring training and eventually to the farm club at the right level.
As a fearless journalist I have allowed my natural curiosity to dictate whether or not I should spend valuable time attending friendly competitions, because they do not count in the last rankings.
I attended an ice hockey match in which a group of adult women was involved against a university side, a local match day in which teams from the province in which my old newspaper was located were involved, and made a trip last week to watch a dozen teams to see what was going on. And today it will be a preseason -friendly at a university campus.
For me this is less about competition, but just a chance to listen or to take the pulse of any athletic competition. I often get some of my best stories from attending pre -season competitions.
Take for example when this site started in 1998. The first event I went to was in Pocomoke City, MD., A large Jamboree with more than a dozen Varsity teams.
It was that day when I first met the deceased Susan Pusey, just like the late Severna Park (Md.) Head coach, Lilian Shelton. Both women were great coaches and some of the most striking people I have ever met.
Who knows what kind of people we will meet in the days before the American domestic season starts next weekend?
