Yesterday at the Cape Henlopen Field Hockey Playday there were a number of good intergenerational stories that connect the past to the present. And this includes three coaching staff who, as scholastic players, participated in some of the most unforgettable final of the state in the past quarter century.

A big head from the low season was the fact that after led Jodi Hollamon from Delmar (del.), After having led the wildcats to nine straight state championships, left coaching at Varsity level. Coaching of the Wildcats are Stephanie Massey, Peyton Kemp and Angelina Arter, who witnessed the title win of November 18, 2016 at Wilmington Tower Hill (DEL.).

What made the game unforgettable was not only the action on the field, but also what was going on outside the field. The atmosphere, with about a third of the population of Delmar at the game, was that of a European football game. When the last Hoorn sounded, and when the wildcats went to their supporters at the Rullo Field -Hek, the crowd roared.

For example, the crowd on the Maryland Class 4A final of 2003 was between Silver Springbrook (Md.) And Gaithersburg Quince Orchard (Md.). The match was played on November 9, 2003 in the Field Hockey and Lacrosse complex at the University of Maryland.

In an overtime game for the centuries, Katie Class – a player who received the nickname “Ice Age” for her foot speed, who found the ball and a corner to put the game for Springbrook away. The thing is, this game was played during the era when the Athletic Association of the Maryland Public Schools Athletic Association was obliged that overtime would have no replacements while playing, and that no player who played the first period of overtime could participate in the second.

One of the players for that title-winning Springbrook team was Kelly Massino, who is now the head coach for Olney Good Counsel (MD.). The Falcons have won two Washington Catholic Athletic Conference Postseason championships under its custody.

Kate (Windett) Austin also had a memorable last last experience when she was a player at Camden Caeser Rodney (el.). On November 13, 2004, the riders had to compete against multiple Time Champion Wilmington Tower Hill (el.) In the final, but her mother, Debbie Windett, had to change the strategy after just 19 seconds of gameplay. Because it was at that time when a tipped Bal Jaimie Brittingham hit, one of the best players of the riders in the mouth who made her for the game.

The rest of the Caesar Rodney team stood up, played together and won the game 4-0. Kate Austin was on the field that night and has coached Cape Henlopen in the last 13 seasons and won 11 State Championships.

It is amazing that yesterday’s event had such a great collection of players and coaches with great background stories, all in one place. But that is what happens in this game, successfully passing through the years and guiding lessons to groups of young people.
