The NCAA Division III field hockey season ended with hostility. After a close game, the referees assessed a red card on the couch of second place. I don’t know if the card was worn by frustration or if it was a chit – one “let them know that you’re there” movement for future competitions.
And there will be enough future competitions, because the participants in the national final came from the same conference: the New England Small College Athletic Conference.
Middlebury Is on a piece of championships that are so far unseen in the history of the collegial game, either in the AIAW or the NCAA. The Panthers have won every championship that has been disputed since 2017 – seven titles straight. But for Middlebury to be able to fight eighth, a lot is asked of senior Georgianne Defeo, who had 17 goals a year ago.
The enemy of the Panthers in last year’s final Tufts. The Jumbos will have to lean on Vooruit Hannah Biccard, a player born in South Africa before he prepares for Lakeville Hotchkiss (Conn.). But if someone can build a team from the large group of newcomers in this year’s team, the head coach is Tina Mattera, who is already a member of the Tufts Hall of Fame.
Lying in the Nescac’s herb, however Bates Secondary school. Head coach Dani Kogut learned the vessel of Mattera coaching before she brought her defensive mindset to Lewiston. She will rely on second -year goalkeeper Ava Donohue, who had 16 Starts her first -year season and played a beautiful hockey for a seasonal overtime loss for Tufts.
Another team that could compete in front of the crown of Middlebury – both in the competition and in the national tournament – is Williams. Kiki Higgins and Pilar Torres, the two leading point scorers of the team, return for the EPHS. Ellie Smith was an absolute revelation in the goal cage and won the starting position as a first -year colleague.
Christopher Newport Has been a competition for the national title in the course of different seasons, and could make a run, although last year’s most important scorer, Maddison Steele, has graduated and is now an assistant coach. Caroline and Courtney Hughlett, the twins of Charlottesville Albemarle (va.) Are the leading recurring point scorers of the captains. Lily Kerr is an experienced keeper and a lot of her will be asked.
Another team that can break the Nescac Logjam is Salisbury. The seagulls give back their five leading point scorers, led by Junior Arden Huntemann, as well as Marli McDorman and Kaitlyn Demodna. I think this team is ready for a deep November run on a national title.
