Felix Auger-Aliassime appeared to injure his left calf late in the first set of his 7-5, 6-1 loss to Jannik Sinner during round-robin competition at the Nitto ATP Finals on Monday night in Turin.
Auger-Aliassime started to show signs of trouble while serving stay in the opening set at 5-6. The eighth-ranked Canadian promptly dropped serve, and things hardly improved in the second. But afterwards, Auger-Aliassime expressed some optimism.
“(It’s) not dangerous,” assured the 25-year-old. “I’m not too worried about it. He’s a great player. You have to give credit when the guy is just better than you. Today he was better than me. I’ll get ready for the next one.”
“He’s hard to beat anywhere, especially here. He started great [and] I never really looked back. From the first point to the last he was great; the hardest man to beat here.
Assuming he’s ready to go, Auger-Aliassime will face Ben Shelton in his second round-robin match on Wednesday. Sinner will face Alexander Zverev.
Auger-Aliassime and Shelton are both 0-1 in Group Bjorn Borg after the American lost his debut match 6-3, 7-6(6) to Zverev on Sunday. The head-to-head series is 1-0 in favor of the Canadian. Sinner is 5-4 lifetime against Zverev and has won four in a row, including three this season.
