West Midlands football expert Neil Moxley supports Donyell Malen to be Unai Emery’s Secret Weapon this season.
Malen signed for Villa in the winter transfer window before he was immediately and controversially omitted from the Champions League team, so that three Loanese-Marcus Rashford, Marco Asensio and Axel Disasi-Mounds are registered for the knockout rounds.
Malen played three times in other games, mainly as a replacement, scored in 17 performances in a slower than expected integration in Villa Park.
Many observers believe that Malen will be familiar with this season more often. Not preserving with Asensio and Rashford, Jacob Ramsey and Leon Bailey may also sell on their way to the outside, the former PSV wing player has been identified by Moxley as Emery’s ‘Secret Weapon’.
‘He will probably come forward’
“Not too much was seen from Donyell Malen last year. That was a pity – as what has been seen so far, was impressive,” he wrote for Givemessport.
“He was the Autumnman when the Shirts of the Champions League were handed out to Loanese Marco Asensio and Marcus Rashford. It is likely that he will come forward, especially if Leon Bailey continues to Roma.
“The departure of the Jamaica International, which last season ran a tail in shape, should free up some money for Villa to make up for his exit.”
Malen has previously made influence on the couch and scored as a replacement against both Brighton & Hove Albion and Southampton last season. He also repeated 11 target contributions from the Bank for PSV, usually in 2018/19 in the Eredivisie.
For Borussia Dortmund, the club from which he became a member of Villa, he delivered 59 goals contributions in 132 races, including a handful after he was introduced from the bank.
Malen has also proven his ability to have an impact at international level, to score 11 goals and to help nine in its 43 caps for the Netherlands so far. He scored in two separate European championships and has given the Dutch Side through the bank a number of times.
The Villa wing player would like his status of ‘secret weapons’ to be fulfilled in the starting line-up of Emery, not as a replacement. He only played six minutes plus stopping time of Villa’s opening day draw with Newcastle United, albeit after an Ezri Konsa Red Card changed Emery’s replacement strategy in the middle of the second half.
Boubacar Kamara moved to the center of the back next to Tyrone Mings while Villa wanted to keep things tight and hold it to a point.
