Aston Villa player ratings from the Men’s Europa League home win against Young Boys

The latest fan-voted Aston Villa player ratings have arrived following Thursday’s 2-1 Europa League win against Young Boys at Villa Park.

Villa supporters have submitted their player ratings via our AVF rating form, which we will invite you to via our social media during the 2025/26 season.

The process is simple. We’ll be sharing a full-time link asking fans to rate each Villa player out of 10 – without a zero because we’re adults and so are you – before I post my own ratings of Aston Villa review and take an average.

These average scores are used each month for Power Rankings and ultimately to crown a Player of the Season.

Villa v Young Boys player ratings

Emiliano Martinez – 6.5

No major alarm bells were raised in this one from Villa’s foolish chief, who had no apparent culpability for Young Boys’ consolation goal.

Victor Lindelöf – 6.3

A solid display from the experienced centre-back. He was played in his favorite position and went about his business with a minimum of fuss.

Lamare Bogarde – 5.8

Bogarde had three chances to shoot from the edge of the penalty area. He went for it twice and both were blocked, but it was encouraging to see him in those positions from right back.

Pau Torres – 5.8

Young Boys allowed Villa to play passes to the feet and behind, allowing Torres to enjoy himself more than in the last Premier League match. I had him at a slightly higher rating.

Ian Maatsen – 5.5

Maatsen was perhaps the Villa player most guilty of complacency, and it showed in his defence. The work was there, but his decisions on both sides were poor.

Youri Tielemans – 7.3

I thought Tielemans was majestic in midfield from the start and was the best player on the pitch for the hour he played, with one arguable exception. Assisted Villa’s first goal.

Amadou Onana – 6.8

This was another impressive performance from Onana, who was important for Villa in possession but also fought back when necessary.

Evann Guessand 4.5

Guessand lacked brilliance in attacking positions and he was not nearly decisive enough in the final third. He should have been able to influence the match against the weak opponent.

Morgan Rogers – 7.0

I gave Rogers an 8 for the Young Boys game for his impact in a free role and a great assist for Villa’s second goal. He was sharp all the time.

Jadon Sancho – 5.3

This was another standard Sancho performance in a Villa shirt. He does most of the work, has the ball in key areas, but still gets away with the game passing him by.

Donyell Malen – 8.3 – MOTM

An offside flag away from a perfect hat-trick. Brilliant.

Substitutes

Emi Buendía – 5.8

Long enough to show both sides of his game, fighting and making a clever pass behind for Ollie Watkins.

Ross Barkley – 5.5

Came on with half an hour to play, controlled midfield for a while and almost scored.

Ollie Watkins – 5.3

A lot of work, but a complete lack of confidence in the goal.

Ezri Konsa – 5.3

Konsa didn’t have much to do after being given half an hour to play, but was sharp when needed.

Camera Boubacar – 5.5

I didn’t score Kamara as a late substitute for Villa.
