Aston Martin officially announced this week that it is selling Aston Martin. In particular, Aston Martin Lagonda Global Holdings PLC, the car manufacturer that James Bond has been giving his wheels for decades, has signed a binding declaration of intent to sell his interest in the Aston Martin Aramco Formula 1 team. The unknown buyer takes the importance of $ 146 million, resulting in a valuation of the team as a whole by $ 3.2 billion. In other words, Aston Martin only had an interest of 4.6% in Aston Martin and now wants to cash in his chips.

And boy needs the money. When Bloomberg Explains that the company is currently not in good financial health. The maker of the Vantage, Vanquish, DB12 and DBX has lost half of his stock value in the past year, also known as “Auw”. The turnover of the second quarter decreased by 34%, partly due to the lower than the expected demand for its supercars such as the Valkyrie and the upcoming Valhalla.

The worst of all is of course the new tariff regime that influences export to the United States. Although a deal between the US and the UK lowers the car rate to 10% of the ridiculous 27.5% that reached it, that is still four times greater than what it has been historic. Even worse, the deal only indicates that 10% rate to the first 100,000 vehicles that are sent in a year, based on who comes first, is the first. Then it is back to 27.5%, honey. For small volume makers such as Aston, that is terrible news.

Win in (The Business of) Formula 1

This year Formula 1 has actually been something of a bright spot for Aston Martin (the car company, not the racing team, which is struggling throughout the season). Continuous momentum in the fortunes of the sport apparently increased the selling price, which the company had estimated at $ 100 million when it first announced the intention of selling its interest in March, per Motorsport. The final selling price therefore appears to be approximately 50% higher.

The F1 team is run by the Canadian billionaire Lawrence Stroll, whose Yew Tree Consortium also owns 33% of the car manufacturer – and whose son for the Racet team. An existing arrangement between the two entities means that the F1 team will continue under the Aston Martin brand, although the actual manufacturer cashed in. The buyer of the importance of 4.6% is not yet known, but in all likelihood the team will remain the walk for the near future.

Despite his misery this season, the Aston Martin F1 team has a reason for optimism in the future. 2026 will bring a fresh new set of regulations that have to shake the schedule, which may give the green cars a chance. The former chief engineer of Red Bull Adrian Newey has become a member of the outfit, and if he can work the same magic for Aston as he did for RB, it is possible that a challenge for the front of the schedule can materialize.
