Ask ai to predict what the Calgary flames will look like in five years

7 minutes, 37 seconds Read

What is a better time than the dog days of the low season to try to look at the future of the Calgary Flames? That is exactly what I decided to do by asking Bewilderment Ai to give us an idea of what the flames look like five years later.

I asked three questions:

  1. Who will come up with the core of the Flames based on their current selection and prospects?
  2. Which current flames will no longer be in the organization?
  3. What are three major transactions that Craig Conroy will make in the coming years?

Let’s look at the answers!

Which forms the core of the Flames in 2029-30

By determining who will form the core of the Flames in five years, the AI considered two important factors. The first is which young players currently have the Flames that are near their peak at that time. The second is who is the best prospects. Of those names, it projected five to stand out above the rest. But let’s look at all the names first.

Current players who promise to show it

The promising youngsters went up next season: Connor Zary, Martin Pospisil, Morgan Frost and Yegor Sharangovich. I see Zary developing into a core player if he can stay healthy. He has absolutely shown flashes of high -level skills. But I see none of the others who become core players; They will be at best support.

Frost-tender, in the coming year or two he can find a different level-is probably at best a central six-attacker. Now 26 years old, he never scored 20 goals or 50 points in a season. It is most likely that he is near his peak. I love the game of Pospisil, but I seriously doubt that the soon 26-year-old can develop his attacking game enough to be part of the core. Finally, the polarizing Sharangovich. He has five NHL seasons on his resume and did not look like a play driver at all. He will be 31, 2029-30 and – if he is still a flame – a secondary scorer a la Andrew mangiapane.

The AI called Dustin Wolf as a top-ranging targeting prospect that projects the number one custodian “to translate his AHL numbers for a large part of the following decade.” Oops! It forgot to look at the statistics of this season for Wolf. But I still agree with it.

The top perspectives of Flames will probably make it

We have six prospects that AI predicts will most likely graduate to the flames by 2029-30. The obvious: Zayne Parekh. We all know that he seeks skill and a franchise defender could be if his development goes well. FELLOW 2024 FIRST-Rounder Matvei Gridin is also there based on his size and top-six skill potential. No arguments here on one of them, because both had a huge D+1 this season.

After them it is 2023 first round Pick Samuel Honzek. The AI tells me that he “is already right on the roster door” and may be a top-line forward in 2029, but unless he has a great camp, he will probably go back to the Calgary Wranglers for more herbs. I would like to see Honzek put it all together – and he has shown flashes – but at the moment it looks unlikely that he will be part of the core.

Then we have Henry Mews, an ‘all-round blueliner [with] Strong NHL projection. “I really loved Mews with the Ottawa 67s, but his game after he was traded on the Sudbury Wolves was not -inspiring.

Finally, it is a few 2025 drawing choices in Cole Rschy and Theo Stockselius. Yes, you read that well; No Cullen Potter in the top six. It is still very early for both players, but they already look great choices, and it would be fantastic if they are important contributors for the Flames in five years.

The projected top-five of the Flames in 2029-30

Parekh is in the first place, which is very possible. He has all the start of a franchise defender and I could not see him lower than two. Ai, however, has Zary in second place, which is a bit of a surprise. I would not debate that he is in the top five if his development progresses well and he can prevent further injuries.

Third is Honzek. I picked up my jaw just in time to hit the floor again. As I said before, he has shown skill flashes, but his D+1 in the WHL and D+2 in the AHL were not inspiring and marred by injuries. He is not even 21 years old and is almost as polarizing as Sharangovich. Some fans are ready to write to him while others preach patience. I tend to be more towards the latter, but I have not seen enough to believe that there is a top potential there.

Somehow Wolf ended up in fourth place. It is probably because the AI did not look at his NHL season this year. There is no doubt that he and Parekh should be a two, and I don’t think the order really matters. Both projects are elite players in the NHL for years to come.

Finishing the top five is one of Gridin or Prince. Decisions are difficult, I think. The AI says that Gridin Vorst is outstanding on the basis of age and ceiling, but expects Frost to be a “strong component of Late 20S”. I think there is a good chance that Gridin is the one if these are the two options, but of the aforementioned players, I would be above both.

Reeschy and Mews were both honorable mentions that could crack the top five if their development accelerates.

Which current flames will have disappeared by 2029-30

Based on their current age and contract status, AI predicted some players who will most likely disappear by 2029-30. I asked to limit myself to the five probably, since it originally gave me half a schedule to players. You should not shock the list, but it can make you emotional!

Captain Mikael Backlund is most likely disappeared. The first round of the Flames 2007 will be 40 at that time and will probably retire or play in another competition. He played his entire 1,066 game NHL career until this point in Calgary, and it will be a sad day when he leaves.

Completion of the top five are Nazem Kadri, Blake Coleman, Joel Hanley and Kevin Rooney. Kadri, Coleman and Hanley will also push 40 by that time. For Kadri, the AI says that there is a strong chance of retirement, buyout or trade. It does not expect the Coleman to sign up again while staying younger. Hanley is likely to be surpassed by younger talent, and Rooney is currently a free agent, so the AI already hits 0.200.

Acts Craig Conroy can make in the coming years

To predict transactions that the flames would do, I asked the AI to look at Conroy’s movements as general manager so far and the type of players he has focused. It reasoned that the transactions of Conroy “reflect the long-term value in relation to short-term victories”, and he continues to add young skills to the line-up.

It specifically mentioned are transactions with Frost, Elias Lindholm, Jacob Markstrom and Henrik Andersson. Don’t ask about that last name, I’m just the messenger! Anyway, this is what we have come up with.

Three probably transactions

First and foremost, the Flames Rasmus Andersson will exchange for high-end assets. Let’s hope after the Noah Hanifin -debacle! It expects the Flames to get a young NHL-ready player plus a top four prospect or a first round pick. That does not sound far away from the Hanifin return.

The second move has the flames that act one of Frost or Joel Farabee for a top six-zes forcing or another pick with high pull. That is interesting, because they have simply tackled a high choice of drawing – together with Jakob Pelletier – for the duo. However, the reason is especially healthy: neither of them has emerged a game changer and Conroy will want to move one while they have value. The return would be a “more dynamic scoring winger” or a first or second round pick. I don’t hate it; It would be a good asset management to get a high pick back for just one of them.

Finally, the Flames exchange a veteran to erase grid and salary capace. This smells like Coleman. I will be honest with you, it mentioned him as an example of the type of veteran attacker that they would trade. But it also called Rooney, so we will say it’s Coleman. They will deal with him for Picks of Prospects in the Mid round to open more selection places for younger players, because he is not part of the core.

These movements generally seem pretty likely. It will be interesting to follow in the coming years. Hopefully Conroy can bring in a little more elite talent in the coming years through the design or trade. It would be great to see that the team is competitive again when they move to their new arena or shortly thereafter.
