A’s, Joey Meneses agree to Minor League deal

Athletics agrees with first baseman Joey Meneses about a minor league contract, reports Francy Romero. The MAS+ client spent last season in Triple-A with the Mets organization.

Meneses is coming off a .265/.322/.447 line with 11 home runs at the highest minor league level. He put the ball in play, but didn’t run much and posted average batted ball numbers. That wouldn’t be enough to make the MLB roster Pete Alonso And Mark Wind. He will follow a similar path to a big league job with the A’s. They have Nick Kurtz And Brent Rooker locked in at first base and designated hitter, respectively.

The 33-year-old Meneses is likely to leave for Triple-A Las Vegas. He is a career .282/.338/.480 hitter through parts of five Triple-A seasons. Meneses played in the major leagues with the Nationals from 2022 to 2024. He had a big outing out of nowhere as a 30-year-old rookie, hitting .324 with 13 home runs in his first 56 big league games.

A rebuilding Washington team gave him a full year as the starting first baseman to see if they had stumbled upon a late-career breakthrough. That turned out not to be the case, as Meneses hit .261/.311/.370 in nearly 1,000 trips to the plate in 2023-2024. The Nationals cut him at the start of last offseason.
