Arsenal has won the Women’s Champions League for the first time in 18 years.
This competition has been dominated by Barcelona in recent seasons, with the Catalan giants claiming the title in three of the last four campaigns.
But when it mattered the most, Arsenal held their nerve. The final as Underdogs de Noord -London club defined expectations and emerged as heroes in the kettle of Sporting Lisbon’s sweaty, sticky Jose Alvalade Stadium.
The Swedish striker Stina Blackstenius will take the headlines for scoring the single goal that the match has accelerated, but this was a correct team performance of grit and determination.
For years, Arsenal has gone into near-women’s status, forced to look from the sidelines while the Chelsea side of Emma Hayes hit them at the peak of the English women’s game.
Every hope for exploiting a period of instability after last summer’s succession in West London was quickly extinguished by Sonia Bompastor and her team of the domination of the superstars of the top flight.

In the meantime, Arsenal had had a disappointing start of this season under Jonas Eidevall, and a bill in their opening group competition in this competition led the Swedish manager to the door in October.
Up stepped out of few well-known assistant manager Renee SLESERS, and the turnaround started with a revenge. With the gap in the title race that finally turned out to be too big to overcome, the focus moved to Europe, and here they are clearer than anyone could ever have predicted.
Three comeback victories burn clearly in memory, perhaps the most striking against record eight times Champions League champions Lyon in the semi-final. Similarly, the way Sleges and the team have succeeded in taking the fans, flood stadiums in Madrid and Lyon and, of course, North Londs with pride and zeal.
And nowhere was that clearer than in Lisbon this weekend, where Arsenal fans flooded the winding streets of the capital of Portugal to sing about their love for Lotte Wubben-Moy, Katie McCabe and of course Beth Mead.
Mead and her lioness teammate Chloe Kelly have been in a fight for the starting point on the right wing, and it was Kelly who today appeared triumphantly as the first choice.
The game started well with Arsenal with the better chances in the first 30 minutes.
Caitlin Ford came close to the opportunity to go home, but the corner turned out to be too tight and her decision to cross turned out to be a wasted opportunity instead, nobody arrived to capitalize.
Moments later, Kelly was found in the room in the penalty area, but lacked her usual calmness in higher pressure conditions such as this, she skied her volley over the net.

Then, 23 minutes in, Frida Maanum tore off the wing and drove the ball into the box, and Barcelona defender Irene Paredes hit him in her own net. The Arsenal fans broke out, but VAR checked and found Maanum offside, and the referee hit the lead of the gunners.
Maanum was on a role and she had stored a remote shot by Spain’s no. 1 Cata Coll fingertips. Kelly took the corner to follow up and found Kim Little on the edge of the area, but the Arsenal captain could not keep her shot low.
Barcelona took the pressure and the game started to grow Cagey as the break approached, and the Spanish champions came out stronger in the second half.
Claudia Pina-Barca’s hero of the Chelsea 8-2 semi-final Drubbing tried it to cut it from Domselaar, her shot took a deflection from Emily Fox and immersed on the bar and finally away. The Arsenal keeper, who was rooted on the spot, breathed a visible sigh of relief, while Kelly told her teammates to calm down.
Kelly got to see a yellow card in the 67th minute for an error on Alexia Putellas, and butchers chose to withdraw the winger and replaced her with her Lionesses teammate Mead. Blackstenius was also introduced to the battle.
Shortly thereafter, Blackstenius took the ball deep and drove to the Barca penalty area, but could not find the precision to reach past the extensive part of Coll.
Then the breakthrough finally came and came from a combination of the two substitutes. Mead, grabbed the ball from the edge of the penalty area, screwed through the Barca -agent line and to Blackstenius, which slid home home.
The Arsenal fans broke out and the Gunners had a precious lead to hold on to just over 15 minutes of normal time to play. They embraced the mistakes, took the time on their stairs and sent the ball the air on every occasion.
The last whistle blew after seven minutes of added time and the Gunners threw themselves on the throw, illuminated that one striking, 18-year-old record, finally ended.
