Around the Jets: Schenn trade talk, Jets linked to Trocheck

The Winnipeg Jets have no match scheduled today after bouncing back with a 3-1 win over the St. Louis blues in the second half of a back-to-back last night, but NHL insiders David Pagnotta and Chris Johnston continued to spotlight the Jets in trade talks.

Names like Logan Stanley, Gustav Nyquist and Luke Schenn have been mentioned for over a month now as Jets players listen to offers, but Schenn’s name keeps popping up, especially again today from Johnston.

“They have a lot of defenders and it’s pretty clear that Luke Schenn is one of the pieces they have dangling; he’s another player I could see being dealt in relatively short order,” Johnston said on the Chris Johnston Show.

If the Jets try to move Schenn, which they clearly do, the goal would be to get at least a third-round draft pick in return. Kevin Cheveldayoff had to give up a second in 2026 and a fourth in 2027 to take on the 36-year-old’s $2.75 million cap hit, which has clearly turned into an overpayment. If Cheveldayoff can earn back a pick for him, it will be at least a partial victory.

Schenn has one goal and five assists in 35 games this season, while recording 45 goals and 166 assists in 1,107 career games.

A player like Trocheck wouldn’t be a bad addition as the Jets refocus for next season, because at this point, with current developments, it’s fair to wonder if playoffs should even be a topic of conversation. Trocheck would give Winnipeg the solid second-line center they’ve been looking for, and with him in the fourth year of a seven-year deal, he wouldn’t just be a rental. That said, the 32-year-old does have a modified no-trade clause, which could determine whether he would approve a move to Winnipeg. Still, the Jets could at least poke their heads in that direction, and it’ll be interesting to see if anything comes of it, especially with the New York Rangers is expected to sell some of their top players.

Trocheck scored 11 goals and 21 assists in 37 games this season and has totaled 234 goals and 376 assists in 838 NHL games.
