Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press is on the ground covering the Olympics and spoke with Canadian head coach Jon Cooper on Saturday about Josh Morrissey’s status for Sunday’s big game.
Cooper confirmed Morrissey will not play due to the injury, adding to frustration for the defender, who also missed last year’s 4 Nations Face-Off final due to illness. He only managed one Olympic stint before getting injured.
Canadian coach Jon Cooper just confirmed it #NHLJets D Josh Morrissey will NOT play in the gold medal game due to injury. His Olympic Games consisted of one period. This was clearly a setback. Cooper says he is devastated for Morrissey, especially after the 4 Nations Final illness.
“Oh my god. That’s a tough one,” said Cooper. “This is a year where we’ve had the same conversation and I feel for him. He’s just a kid of all worlds and a great hockey player.”
The Puck Drop is scheduled for an early CT of 7:10 AM.
Arniel, however, was less certain about Morrissey’s status.
“We’re bringing him home here and we’ll find out in the next few days.”
The Jets have the day off on Sunday and many players will likely tune in for the gold medal game.
